Job description

As assistant professor, you develop and teach courses in the bachelor Public Administration / Public Governance (in Dutch) and master Public Governance (English), which include courses in the field of politics, public administration and governance, as well as in research methodology (qualitative and quantitative). You also participate in research carried out by the team of the Politics and Public Administration scholars, part of the Department of Public Law and Governance. In the course of your appointment, you will develop a research profile, in line with the research profile and priorities of the Law School, in which transformations and innovations in law and public governance are central. The research conducted within Tilburg Law School is aimed at both scientific and societal relevance. It is organized into several cross-departmental research programs, including Global Law and Governance, New Modes of Lawmaking and Governance in a Multilayered Order, Law and Security, and Law and Technology. Key research themes of the public administration team include 1) democratic governance and the rule of law (including participatory and digital governance), 2) local and regional governance (in close connection with EU and global governance and law), as well as 3) regulatory governance and (technological) innovation. The intended ratio between teaching and research is roughly 40%-40%, with the remaining 20% for administrative duties.

You have a PhD in Public Administration or a topic relevant to Public Administration in a related discipline. Your growth potential in the field of research is evident from already published international journal articles. It is an advantage if you already have experience with multidisciplinary research, in particular the combination with law, or with sociology, economics and/or management. You have demonstrable teaching experience and good didactic skills. In addition, you are a collaborator with good communication skills. You are fluent in English and preferably also in Dutch, or are prepared to learn Dutch within the first two years of your appointment. You are expected to have a Basic Teaching Qualification (in Dutch: BKO), or are prepared to acquire this within the first year of your appointment. You are committed to be an active member of our team and the department and to integrate in the environment provided by t the department and the school.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: an employment agreement for a period of 4 to 6 years.

The starting gross salary varies between €3,637 and €4,978 per month (full time) based on scale 11 of the Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities. Employees recruited from abroad may be eligible for the 30% tax facility- this means that 30% of your salary will be paid as a tax-free reimbursement.

Tilburg University offers you an employment agreement for a period of 4 to 6 years.

You are entitled to a holiday allowance amounting to 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% of your gross yearly income. If you work 40 hours per week, you receive 41 days of paid recreational leave per year.

Tilburg Law School

Tilburg Law School offers highly-ranked national and international education and research in law and public administration. Currently, 3,500 students are enrolled at Tilburg Law School. Students can choose from five Bachelor's programs, one of which is taught in English (Bachelor Global Law) and ten Master's programs, eight of which are taught in English. The international orientation of Tilburg Law School is reflected in these Bachelor's and Master's programs. The research conducted within Tilburg Law School is aimed at social relevance and provides students with the tools and skills to study and deal with current issues at an academic level.

The Department of Public Law & Governance is a unique collaboration of researchers in the field of Public Law and Public Administration, in which various disciplines work together: International Law, European law, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Environmental Law, Public Administration, Legal Philosophy, Political Science, Legal History and Jurisprudence. The collaboration within the department is very much inspired by a joint research interest. Whereas many scholars in the field of Public Law and Public Administration primarily focus on their internal dynamics, the Tilburg scholars are driven by a primary focus on both their context and foundations. They work together by the joint inspiration to rethink publicness in a globalized, multi-layered, and hypercomplex world, from the local to the global. 

The team for Politics and Public Administration is part of the Department of Public Law and Governance and consists of  a multidisciplinary team of professors, researchers, teachers and PhD students of about 30 people. The team that conducts research into developments in the field of politics and governance and, in cooperation, gives shape to bachelor's and master's degrees in Public Administration and Public Governance. The emphasis is on the connection between politics, public administration and law in studying and addressing contemporary societal issues. Public Administration / Public Governance presents itself as a relatively small-scale, interactive study program with an influx of approximately 130 students per year. As a result, teaching can be challenging and intensive. For research and teaching on Public Governance, the team works closely together with other departments within Tilburg Law School and with other Departments and Schools at Tilburg University.
