Job description

Radboud University Medical Center (Radboudumc) Nijmegen sets out to attract a prominent clinical researcher for a chair in neuroradiology: a highly qualified researcher with an excellent track record and research network, strengthening the leading position in neuroscience of our institution. This position will be placed in the department of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Anatomy (from here on RNA).

Radboudumc is internationally renowned in both clinical imaging and human cognitive neuroimaging. Based on the potential synergies between two of the strongest research departments (RNA and Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour) at Radboudumc, there is a need for linking the neuroimaging groups at Donders with a yet to be founded neuroradiology group at RNA, translating innovative neuroimaging into clinical practice. Important brain research themes at Radboudumc include stroke, movement disorders (PD in particular), neuromuscular diseases (and their effect on the brain), Alzheimer´s disease and neurodevelopmental, mood and substance-related disorders.

Radboudumc has the ambition to become the most person-centered and innovative hospital in the Netherlands. The new professor in Neuroradiology is required to use technical innovations to provide excellent, person-centered and innovative patient care that not only is based on brain morphology but also on brain function and connectivity. By pioneering this shift, Radboudumc will expand its leading role in medical innovations in clinical neurosciences.

Research
The professorship will establish a successful research line, focussing on research in MRI beyond structural MRI, with techniques (including fMRI), studying brain networks and the effect of various diseases in these networks. The goal is linking successful fundamental research lines at the Donders Institute with clinical research at Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery and other brain-related specialties at Radboudumc, using the facilities at RNA. Incorporation of novel artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, deep learning in particular, will be an important factor to facilitate clinical translation and keeping the cost of care under control. They are important tools for innovating diagnosis of various brain-based disorders and potentially affect treatment of these disorders.

Patient care
Technology used by the Donders Institute is to be better translated into clinical practice, and AI techniques developed are to be customized and made available for other departments. The professorship will strengthen the clinical position of Radboudumc in Neuroradiology and she/he will contribute to clinical patient care at RNA at least two days a week and fulfill a prominent role in the section Neuroimaging at RNA. The new professor will make clinical expertise available to the whole section and will focus on translational aspects of research: making functional MRI techniques available in clinical practice, hereby strengthening the innovative and person-centered strategy of Radboudumc.

Education and training
RNA has a prominent role in student education for Medicine and BioMedical Sciences. The new professor will also have an educational and training task. We ask you to participate in the training and educational activities for medical students, biomedical students, radiographers, and residents of radiology, neurology and clinical physics. You will develop and coordinate the student electives in neuroimaging at RNA.
We also ask of you to participate in training PhD students within the Donders Graduate School. Specific focus will be the supervision of master students within scientific projects both at the Donders Institute and at RNA. Lectures and internships in clinical neuroimaging should be part of the Cognitive Neuroscience Master and the Biomedical Science Master.
