The Department of the Built Environment has a 1.0 fte vacancy for an Assistant Professorship in the Urban Planning and Transportation Group within the unit Urban Systems and Real Estate (USRE).

Job description

The Department covers different disciplines that are concerned with the planning, design and maintenance of the built environment and is organized into units. Jointly with the Real Estate Management and Development Group and the Information Systems in the Built Environment Group, The Urban and Transportation Group makes up the Urban Systems and Real Estate Unit. Research is organized in the context of the Design and Decision Support Systems research program. The group currently has 7 faculty and staff members and about 30 PhD candidates and postdocs.

The group is responsible for teaching Bachelor and Master courses in urban and transportation planning and participating in multi-disciplinary teaching projects at the unit, department and university level. It advocates an academic, research-driven and user-oriented integral approach to urban and transportation planning. Research is focused on the development of models for predicting the demand for various land use and transportation options with special focus on emerging services and technologies. The effects of planning and policy interventions and their integration in decision support systems are of interest.

The successful candidate will be expected to be involved in conducting research focusing on the  relation between urban mobility and planning transition on the verge of smart city emergence considering travel behavior of citizens as mediators.  Moreover, the candidate requires to teach courses on urban planning (planning theory, history, concepts, emerging trends in both integral and facet planning, planning methods) at both the Bachelor and Master level and supervising undergraduate, master, and doctoral students (during some quartiles, teaching may amount to a full work load). In addition, the candidate is expected to engage in scholarly activities, such as writing proposals for national and international grants, applied and academic research projects, contributing to the research activities of the group in collaborated efforts with co-workers, master and PhD students and present the outcomes of the research activities at international conferences and in well-respected academic and professional journals.

•             You hold an MSc Degree in Engineering and a PhD Degree in the field of urban or transportation planning or in a related field;

•             You have demonstrated your research skills by means of publications in reputed journals and conference proceedings.

•             You can create a vibrant and effective learning environment and have the ability to motivate students both in research-based and challenge-based types of education (academic proficiency and design and engineering attitude).

•             You have a supportive international network in academia and industry, which will help you to acquire research funding.

•             You have a good command of English, both orally and in writing.

•             You are able to work collaboratively as well as independently.

 

We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated to teach in innovative ways the latest knowledge in urban planning, and inspire and support young students in their professional development. Teaching is expected to be supported by an active stream of research at the international research frontier. Candidates are expected to be team-players and commit to the teaching and research objectives of the unit and department.

We offer a temporary appointment for five years in a 'development track'. The development track can lead to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming associate professor. This provides young and talented scientists with the opportunity to grow into an internationally acknowledged academic. Based upon performance indicators agreed upon at the start of your appointment, a decision will be made in the final year whether or not to offer you a permanent position.



We offer support to your professional and personal development.  The TU/e helps its scientific staff to further develop their teaching skills by offering a training program that leads to the official teaching certification from Dutch Universities (University Teaching Qualification). Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to participate in the training Academic Leadership for Assistant Professors and a mentoring program.



Gross monthly salaries are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is based on knowledge and experience and is at least € 3.637,00 up to a maximum of € 4.978,00 gross per month (salary scale 11, cao NU) at a fulltime appointment; plus 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year allowance.  Besides that the TU/e provides an attractive package of fringe benefits (including excellent work facilities, child care and excellent sport facilities).
