Eindhoven University of Technology has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher on 3D printing in remanufacturing supply chains (1.0 fte) within the Operations, Planning, Accounting and Control (OPAC) group of the School of Industrial Engineering.

Research Project

The postdoc position is part of the Future Logistics project funded, a.o., by the European Union through OPZuid. In the project, there will be collaboration with the other partners of the project: DSV Solutions Nederland, ChainStock, Smart Robotics, Ephi, F3-Design, and Avans University of Applied Sciences. The project focuses on using new technologies in future logistics operations.

The postdoc position is focused on using 3D printing in remanufacturing operations. Companies such as DSV perform remanufacturing services for customers, which mean that they take back products from the field and perform small repairs on them, when needed, so that they can be used again in the field. Many different components may be required for the small repairs. It would economically be very interesting not to stock all those different components, but print them when needed. Our goal is to find out how 3D printing can be used in this context and for which kind of parts. Complex multi-echelon inventory control models will be required to be able to reach our goals.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to do scientific research in the domain described and publish research results in scientific journals. There will be close collaboration with dr.ir. Rob Basten and prof.dr. Ton de Kok. In this position, you will spend a small part of your time on the supervision of BSc and MSc students who will work on subparts of the project with one or more of the industrial partners. Furthermore, you will have some other teaching duties.

The Operations, Planning, Accounting and Control group teaches and conducts research in the area of operations planning and control in manufacturing, services, logistics, reliability and maintenance, and supply chains. Research is generally quantitative in nature, while many of the researchers also engage in empirical research. The OPAC group is responsible within the university for all teaching in the areas of operations management, transportation, manufacturing operations, reliability and maintenance, and accounting and finance, both at undergraduate and graduate level. All research is embedded in Beta, the research school for Operations Management & Logistics.

Requirements

  • PhD in industrial engineering, operations research, operations management or a comparable domain with a solid background in stochastic quantitative research methods, preferable in the area of inventory control.
  • Ability to conduct high quality academic research, demonstrated for instance by a relevant PhD thesis and/or publication(s).
  • Ability to teach, shown by experience or assistance in teaching and positive evaluations of these teaching efforts.
  • Excellent mastering of the English language, good communication and leadership skills. Note that there is no Dutch language requirement.
  • Be a team player and able to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary context.
