Job description

The Nikhef Theory group has openings for PhD positions in theoretical particle physics Nikhef is the Dutch national institute for subatomic physics, where approximately 175 physicists and 75 technical staff members work together in an open and international scientific environment, performing theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle and astroparticle physics. Nikhef hosts a vibrant theoretical physics group, which collaborates closely with the experimental groups. Among the Nikhef research collaborations are the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the XENONnT dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso and the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina.

The group
The activities of the Nikhef theory group (https://www.nikhef.nl/pub/theory/local.php)  include higher-order calculations and jet physics in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics, parton distribution functions, 3D imaging of the proton, effective field theories, flavour physics, gravity, and cosmology, among others. The Nikhef theory group and Nikhef as a laboratory provide a very stimulating environment with many seminars, colloquia, and journal clubs meetings, including also various interactions with the experimental groups.

Job description
We are looking for candidates for two PhD positions:
- One focused on Flavour Physics (with Prof. dr. Robert Fleischer). The successful candidate for this position will utilize flavour processes, in particular decays of B mesons, to explore patterns of New Physics in observables accessible at the high-precision frontier

- The second position is focused on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (with Dr. Juan Rojo). The successful candidate for this position will focus on phenomenological interpretation of data from the LHC and other experiments within the SMEFT, with emphasis on the development and application of new machine learning techniques.

Requirements Applicants should have a Master degree (or equivalent) in physics and good knowledge of Quantum Field Theory and the Standard Model. Good software skills are desirable.
Further information on these positions can be obtained from the head of the Nikhef theoretical physics group, Prof.dr. Robert Fleischer (robert.fleischer@nikhef.nl).

Conditions of employment

Offer
The candidate will be employed by the NWO-I-foundation and will obtain the status of junior scientist. He/she will receive a 4 year contract. Your gross monthly starting salary will be € 2.407,-, increasing to € 3.085,- in the fourth year. The conditions of employment of the NWO-I-foundation are excellent and can be found on www.nwo-i.nl. The starting date of the appointments is in the autumn of 2020.
As Theoretical Physics PhD students, the candidates will become members of the Dutch Research School of Theoretical Physics (DRSTP), offering a wide spectrum of activities.  Application Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply by clicking the 'Apply Now' button below. Please be prepared to upload a curriculum vitae, a brief motivation letter and a statement of research interests, as well as to give the email addresses of at least two referees who are willing to send a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Only applications received before the 15th of June 2020 will receive full consideration.
