Job description

This Ph.D. position focusses on the visualization and interaction techniques that afford an effective combination of artificial intelligence and human expert knowledge/skills in segmentation and detection tasks for head-and-neck cancer proton therapy.  This is the 2nd PhD position in this research project that aims to develop interactive human-centric deep learning methods for medical imaging in order to optimize the work-flow. In particular, approaches for the fast and accurate location and segmentation of tumor and organs-at-risk from imaging data will be the focus. Since fully automatic segmentation methods are too limited in accuracy, manual corrections by human experts to improve the quality to the clinical standard are needed. The project involves clinical partners at the Holland Proton Therapy Center and the Leiden University Medical Center. The position is focused on the human-computer interaction and visualization aspects of the research project and a collaboration with a second Ph.D. project focused on the collaborative deep learning approaches is planned.

Employer

Technische Universiteit Delft

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is a multifaceted institution offering education and carrying out research in the technical sciences at an internationally recognised level. Education, research and design are strongly oriented towards applicability. TU Delft develops technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At TU Delft you will work in an environment where technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft comprises eight faculties, unique laboratories, research institutes and schools.

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of EEMCS brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers strengthen each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single-cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this challenging environment.

The position is jointly offered by the Computer Graphics and Visualization group, which is part of the Department of Intelligent Systems, and the Department of Human Centered Design of the Facutly Industrial Design Engineering.

The Computer Graphics and Visualization Group has a strong research record and is known for its expertise in rendering, visualization, modeling, game technology, and visual analytics. Besides these major topics, interaction techniques, virtual/augmented reality, vision, perception, computational photography, and simulation play an important role. The group consists of 5 faculty members and around 20 Ph.D. students/postdocs. The group also participates strongly in the Delft Research Initiatives “Environment”, and “Health”, thus aiming to find solutions for tomorrow’s problems. It maintains a strong network of partners worldwide from academia, medical centers, and industry.

The Human Information Communication Design section focuses on researching and facilitating human communication and interaction in an increasingly complex world where people, artifacts and technology merge. Our research ranges from theoretical and empirical studies into fundamental mechanisms of human perception and cognition to experimental design research and interventions in applied settings.

To apply, please e-mail a detailed CV (with contact to two referees) along with a short letter of motivation. Please e-mail your application by to Hr-eemcs@tudelft.nl.
