Job description

Safety and reliability of structures and infrastructures is a basic societal need, being deeply influenced by a demand to reduce negative impact of structures and infrastructures on society. Societal challenges in this respect are climate change, risk aversity in society and an increasing pressure on use of space. New developments in structural design (e.g. parametric design, virtual/augmented reality, digitisation of the design and construction chain) together with further developments in existing technologies (BIM, FEM, digital prototyping) are expected to have major impact. We therefore have a vacancy for an assistant professor Parametric Structural Design and Digital Fabrication (1,0 fte). Focus of this position will be mainly on buildings and civil infrastructures, with special emphasis on structural design technologies in relation to all construction materials. For this position we are looking for a candidate with expertise in parametric structural design and engineering, computational engineering and/or digital fabrication, virtual/augmented reality and digitisation of the design and construction chain, to be translated both in research projects and inspiring education.

Department
The position is part of the department Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD). 3MD focuses on the design, mechanics, materials and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials level), to meso-scale (structures level) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems level). The department governs the entire life cycle from develop, design, build, maintain, operate to demolish or reuse, and has strong competences in modelling and design for both civil infrastructures as well as buildings.

Novel, advanced civil engineering materials offer solutions to current societal challenges regarding safety, durability and sustainability. The group Applied Mechanics focusses on computational analysis of these materials. Within Applied Mechanics a sub-group is working on Structural Design. Main focus of this group is to realize safe and reliable structures and infrastructures. This sub-group is deeply involved in education, providing four courses in the BSc Civil Engineering and eight courses in the MSc Civil Engineering.
