Job description

As GSE Department Manager you will lead the efficient and effective organisation of the department in matters of operational management. You play a proactive role in these matters and support the Department Chair and members of the Departmental Management Team in improving the governance and development and implementation of the strategy of the Department. You are an active member in the faculty team of Department Managers in the Faculty. The position is characterised by close cooperation with the Faculty support units, which include Finance, Human Resources (HR), Education and Student Affairs, Communication, Facility Management, the Graduate School, and the TU Delft Valorisation Centre.

The responsibilities include:

  • Supervising the Management Support team (6 persons);
  • Organizing the financial management and administration of the Department, including the yearly budget cycle, the regular and timely provision of management information, and the supporting the project leaders both in the acquisition phase and operational phase of the projects concerning their project budgets;
  • Coordinating HR procedures, e.g. (re)appointments of staff, promotions of staff, supporting the yearly Result & Development Cycle;
  • Supporting the logistics of educational activities;
  • Coordinating Department meetings and events, and external visitors' programmes.

Department
The Department of Geoscience and Engineering (GSE) is one of two geoscience departments within the Faculty of CEG. The Department of GSE (about 200 FTE) performs research and provides education at the interface of geoscience disciplines (geology, geophysics) and engineering sciences (resource engineering, geotechnical engineering, geo-energy engineering and environmental engineering). It houses a well-equipped laboratory. Our scientific staff members aim to be world-leading in their field, and its fundamental and applied research is of major societal relevance. The Department participates in many national and EU research programmes, and has a large number of research projects sponsored by industrial consortia or public-private partnerships.
The composition of staff and students in the Department is international, therefore all education as well as most of the oral and written internal communication is in English.

The Department of GSE is the primary responsible unit for the BSc programme and most of the MSc programmes in Applied Earth Sciences. Moreover, it is responsible for the geotechnical engineering aspects of the BSc and MSc programmes in Civil Engineering.

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • Result-orientated, enthusiastic and resourceful, independent thinking;

  • Unifying and sensitive approach to organisational and personal relationships;
  • Very good communication skills in Dutch and English, both spoken and written;
  • Strong organisational capacities;
  • Experience with financial management and administration;
  • Affinity with the research and application domains of the Department;
  • Ability to develop, implement and monitor strategic and operational plans;
  • Work experience in a university environment.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year initially with prospect of extension to permanent employment.

Faculty Civil Engineering & Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology, and delta technology.
