The approach is interdisciplinary, and includes legal and policy analysis, ethnographic research and debates on related topics. The candidate will join a team of five, and will collaborate on all elements of the project, for which training will be provided where necessary. Educational tasks may be involved, depending on the candidate’s expertise.

Job description

Project: Global data justice in the era of big data: toward an inclusive framing of informational rights and freedoms (DATAJUSTICE).

The ‘data revolution’ has created new visibilities, particularly in lower-income regions of the world. These visibilities are not neutral: they offer the possibility of promoting human development, and simultaneously have the potential to amplify socioeconomic and geographical power asymmetries and open up new markets for platforms and services. These new sources and possibilities also involve linkages between the public and private sectors worldwide that have implications for citizenship, representation and the public domain.

The Global Data Justice project, funded by the European Research Council and led by Linnet Taylor, starts from the assumption that a global framework for data governance is emerging through both normative frameworks and market relations. The project has the objective of informing and shaping this evolution towards principles of social justice. It aims to do so by conceptualising and developing an empirically informed framework for data governance, seeking common principles based on the needs of the people who produce and are affected by new data technologies worldwide. The research has two main objectives:

  1. To provide a critical assessment of the case for, and the obstacles to, data justice as an overall framework for data technologies’ design and governance;
  2. To present a conceptual framework for a social-justice-informed approach to global data governance, and refine it through a series of discussions and debates worldwide.
