Job description

The Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML), Faculty of Science, is looking for two  Junior lectorers to assist in its interdisciplinary education programmes, including the Master programmes Industrial Ecology (IE) and Governance of Sustainability (GoS), and the Minor Sustainable Development.

Are you an interdisciplinary thinker with a MSc or PhD degree in Industrial Ecology, Sustainability, Environmental Sciences or a related field? Do you enjoy connecting the dots between the insights from different fields, but are also aware of the challenges that come with combining disciplines? Are you interested in education and do you want to improve your didactic skills? And do you enjoy coaching students? If so, our junior lecturer positions might be for you!

Key responsibilities
Per quarter, you will help teach one or more of our courses to multidisciplinary groups of students. Besides helping out the course coordinators with regular teaching tasks (including moderating (online) workgroups, assessing and providing feedback on assessments), you will also mentor the students as they develop personally and professionally during the first year of their Master’s. You will have the opportunity to follow courses to further build your educational skills and experience.

You are expected to:

  • Help teach in several courses in the MSc IE, GoS and/or Minor programmes , in close collaboration with your fellow junior lecturer and course coordinators;
  • Evaluate, give feedback on and assess assignments and exercises;
  • Monitor the students’ progress (also in the development of their academic skills);
  • Create a safe working environment in which students can learn from and with each other;
  • Stimulate students’ interdisciplinary and pro-active attitudes.

Requirements

  • At least a Master’s degree, ideally in Industrial Ecology, Sustainability, Environmental Science or a related discipline;
  • A background and interest in interdisciplinary education and thinking within this field;
  • Good didactic skills and (preferably) didactic experience;
  • The ability to coach students through (interdisciplinary) group work;
  • Excellent organization and communication skills;
  • Fluent command of the English language, verbally and in writing;
  • Eager to contribute actively to improving the quality of education; have a proactive and adaptive attitude;
  • Be able to motivate and encourage students.

Conditions of employment

The starting date is 17 August 2020. The successful candidates will be part of an ambitious and dynamic young team. They will initially be appointed for one year with the possibility of a renewal for one more year based on need, funding and performance. For this position the University Job Classification System 'Teacher 4' applies. The salary ranges, depending on level of education and relevant work experience, between  € 2,790.-  to € 4,402.-  gross per month with a full employment contract of 38 hours per week (according to scale 10 Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities).

The Institute of Environmental Sciences Leiden (CML) is part of the Faculty of Science at Leiden University. The research subjects comprise ecotoxicology, conservation and restoration ecology, ecosystem services, life cycle assessments, supply chains analysis and global resources.
