The Department of Biotechnology at Delft University of Technology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Environmental Biotechnology. We are looking for a talented and motivated candidate who will develop a new, independent research line within our Environmental Biotechnology group. Proposed research lines can be either experimental, computational and/or focused on process engineering. Non-exclusive examples of possible research directions could be i) engineering of microbial communities, ii) resource recovery technology, or (iii) modelling of conversion and transport processes in environmental biotechnology.
We expect our new colleague to enthusiastically teach and develop courses in the BSc programmes Life Science and Technology (LST) and /or Molecular Science and Technology, which are taught together with Leiden University, and in the TU Delft MSc programmes Life Science and Technology and/or Chemical Engineering. In addition the tenure-track assistant professor will supervise BSc, MSc, PDEng, and PhD students during their research projects.
Successful applicants can expect a competitive start-up package for their research program, which they should further expand by attracting external research funding. Specialized staff members are available at TU Delft to support tenure-track assistant professors in building and strengthening their own research programs and to provide administrative support interdisciplinary and collaborative research ventures. Department
The position is available in the Department of Biotechnology, which engages in internationally-leading education programmes and offers a stimulating research environment in the biosciences that combines fundamental science, engineering, and design, all directed towards biotechnological process innovations. The Department covers the areas of biocatalysis, bioprocess engineering, cell systems engineering, environmental biotechnology, industrial microbiology, and biotechnology and society. The Department harbours excellent laboratory facilities and infrastructure and shares a state-of-the-art building with the Bionanoscience and Chemical Engineering departments. Working in such close proximity facilitates inter-departmental collaborations on multidisciplinary projects.
The ideal candidate has:
Fixed-term contract: tenure track (6 years with the prospect of a permanent contract).
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, Head of Department and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.
