Job description

Research
As a tenure-track Assistant Professor you will further strengthen the research in experimental nonlinear photonics, ultrafast and/or nonlinear optical phenomena in condensed matter. We are looking for a colleague who’s research focus is complementary to the current activities in the group of Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Correlated Materials (USCM). For instance, it could be focused on magneto-plasmonics, ultrafast spintronics, THz magnonics, far- and mid-infrared (THz) spectroscopy. The expertise we look for adds novel aspect to your programme, but is also coherent with it. The campus of the Radboud University hosts two unique large scale facilities - the High Field Magnetic Laboratory (HFML) and the Free Electron Laser for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX). The group has strategically decided to develop collaboration with the facilities and the candidates are encouraged to describe their vision of the development of joint projects with FELIX and HFML in the future.

Education

You will be contributing to the development and teaching of modern and inspiring courses in physics. These courses are part of the bachelor and master programs of the educational institute of Physics & Astronomy, which have strong ties to the research of the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM). The educational programs prepare the students for professional practice in the fields of generating knowledge (fundamental and applied research), transfer of knowledge (communication and education) and use of knowledge (business and management). To achieve this, the interaction between scientific research and education is essential. The strong connection between education and research offers a means to keep and attract talented master students for PhD projects by giving them the possibility to actively shape their PhD projects. We are looking for a candidate who can contribute to Bachelor and Master courses on topics such as Electrodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, and to develop new courses in the field of Photonics.

We want to get the best out of science, others and ourselves. Why? Because this is what the world around us desperately needs. Leading research and education make an indispensable contribution to a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all. This is what unites the more than 22,000 students and 5,000 employees at Radboud University. And this requires even more talent, collaboration and lifelong learning. You have a part to play!

Department

Faculty of Science

The Institute for Molecules and Materials is a research institute in chemistry and physics, which fosters interdisciplinary research. Its mission is to design and create functional molecules and materials to fundamentally understand their behavior. The IMM comprises 19 research groups active in areas ranging from condensed matter science to organic chemistry and chemical biology. We focus on fundamental research with an open eye for societal applications and educates the next generation of leaders in science and innovation.

The IMM distinguishes itself from similar institutes by the intense collaborations and interactions between chemists and physicists and/or experimentalists and theorists and the very strong infrastructure that includes large user facilities such as the High Field Magnet Laboratory (HFML)and the Free Electron Laser facility FELIX.

You will be part of the department Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Correlated Materials (USCM, part of the IMM) headed by Prof. Alexey Kimel. The USCM department has a broad research program to study ultrafast dynamics order parameter and recording in ferroics (magnets, ferroelectrics, multiferroics). We use amplified femtosecond laser systems, and state-of-the-art techniques for spectroscopy and imaging. The group is working in a strong collaboration with several theory groups.
