Job description

The PhD position (4 years) is independent of any overarching research project and is funded by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University. It should concentrate on modern Islam (20th-21st century) in the Middle East, preferably with an emphasis on theology, politics, Islamism or Salafism. The focus of the project may be the study of textual primary sources, but fieldwork-based proposals will also be considered.

Requirements

Qualifications:
  • an MA or equivalent degree in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, or a cognate discipline, or an MA thesis in one of these fields already accepted by the MA committee;
  • knowledge of at least one primary Islamicate language (preferably Arabic, but other languages will also be considered);
  • proficiency in academic English as well as the ability to work with secondary literature in modern European languages;
  • ability to work independently and in a team, with good organisational and communication skills.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for a period of 18 months. In case of good performance and a positive evaluation, the contract will be extended for the remaining period of 30 months (for a total of 4 years). The gross salary ranges between €2,395 in the first year and €3,061 in the fourth year (scale P according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
