The Department of Communication Science of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences has a vacancy for a Lecturer in Corporate Communication within Communication Science.

What will you be doing?

Teaching and research in the program group Corporate Communication focuses on the development, execution and especially the effects of communication strategies towards internal and external stakeholders of organizations. These organizations include companies in the private sector, but also civil society and public organizations. Strategic communication is directed towards mass media and the general public (public relations), government institutions (public affairs), investors (investor relations), and employees (employee communication). In this context, we focus on mediatization processes, artificial intelligence & technology use, legitimacy & visibility, and sustainability & diversity. These themes are studied and taught in the context of communication theory. As part of the Amsterdam School of Communication Science (ASCoR) we primarily use a communication science perspective for our research. We therefore aim at teaching mainly quantitative methods.

The candidate:

• teaches modules in the standing programmes of the Bachelor and Master communication science in Dutch and English. The Master program is taught in English only, the Bachelor program has a Dutch track, next to an English track;
• supervises and evaluates Bachelor theses, Master theses and internships within corporate communication;
• participates in committees, groups and projects in the program group Corporate Communication;
• organizes teaching in the field of Corporate Communication.

The lecturer corporate communication will be part of the program group Corporate Communication, chaired by Dr Piet Verhoeven.

What do we require of you?

The candidate:

• has a PhD in Communication Science or a related program;
• has a broad teaching experience; a teaching certificate (BKO) has to be obtained;
• has excellent command of spoken and written Dutch and English;
• has a broad knowledge of communication science in general;
• is capable of providing a stimulating teaching environment and is a good team worker.

PhD candidates in their final phase are explicitly encouraged to apply. Lecturers spend all their time on teaching and teaching-related tasks.

Our offer

The position is temporary for 2 years, though tenure is possible pending track record. The starting date is negotiable, preferably 1 January 2021.

The lecturer position is scale 11 as per the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Salary depends on past education and relevant work experience, with a minimum salary of €3,746 and a maximum salary of €5,127 gross per month based on a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week. We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary employee benefits, including a generous holiday scheme and year-end bonus. Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam focuses on the production, uses, and consequences of information and communication in informing, persuading, and entertaining citizens. There are currently four program groups: Corporate Communication, Political Communication & Journalism, Persuasive Communication, and Youth& Media Entertainment.

With more than 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students, Communication Science is among the biggest departments at the University of Amsterdam. The College of Communication and the Graduate School of Communication offer a Bachelor and Master program, a European joint degree program in Journalism and a Research Master, the only of its kind in the Netherlands.
