Job description

In this position you will make an important contribution to the research of safety science at TU Delft. In particular, you will be focusing on the research of human and organizational factors contributing to safety performance. The ultimate aim is to develop, test and measure the effect of practical, feasible, attractive and self-sustainable interventions aimed at establishing a just culture / improving Psychological Safety and link it to performance indicators. As such the research is part of fundamental research to improve the body of knowledge of safety science in healthcare and other domains.

You should look for opportunities to learn from dealing with these factors in other domains, to cooperate with industries and to enable a more comprehensive socio-technical quantitative risk assessment development. 

You are willing to work in a multidisciplinary environment and have proven experience in providing and developing education and guidance for Bachelor and Master students. In particular you will supervise a newly recruited PhD candidate safety management in the healthcare sector.

Department
The Values, Technology and Innovation (VTI) department is one of the three departments of the TPM faculty. The department consists of a unique combination of philosophers, economists and risk scientists.

The Safety and Security Science section is one of the three sections within the VTI department. Inspiring, excellent education is a central objective of TU Delft and the department. The Safety and Security Science section is known for its research and teaching of methods and techniques for risk analysis of socio-technical systems. Recently a new centre for safety in healthcare has been initiated within the section. The focus of the centre will be on the development of scientific methods and techniques to achieve a Just Culture environment in healthcare organizations, as well as high-hazard industries, in an efficient and effective manner and to communicate about this development in both scientific and non-scientific stages. To this end, new measurement methods, modeling techniques and interventions will be devised and tested. There is a need for a senior researcher ‘organisational learning’ who can contribute to this focus.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in social sciences on a safety scientific - or risk management related theme with an affinity to work in organizational settings;
  • Verifiable affinity with empirical studies, quantitative modelling, and ethics of technology;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • Excellent skills of the Dutch and English language (oral and written);
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant working experience;
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in a team.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 3 years.

The function has a scope of 38 hours per week. This is a temporary appointment for three years, with an intended starting date of 1 December 2020. The contract may be terminated in case the external funding of the centre would end.

The salary depends on education and experience based on a maximum of scale 12 (with a maximum of € 5826 gross per month in the case of a full-time appointment).
