Tilburg Law School of Tilburg University is looking for an Associate Professor Philosophy of Data Driven Technology.
The department of Law, Technology, Markets, and Society (LTMS, home of TILT and TILEC) carries out multi- and interdisciplinary research and education concerning the regulation of socio-technical change. The Department is seeking to recruit an expert in philosophy of data-driven technologies and techno-regulation, an important pillar for the Department’s vision. This is a position open to both internal and external candidates.

Job description

The department of Law, Technology, Markets, and Society (LTMS – home of TILT & TILEC) invites applications for an associate professor position in the field of philosophy of technology, with a clear link to regulatory challenges of data-driven technologies (e.g. Artificial Intelligence, algorithmic decision making, blockchain). The successful candidate is expected to research, teach, and supervise (post-graduate) non-philosophy students in the field of Data science, Technology Regulation and Innovation. (S)he is expected to develop new ideas in research and education, and acquire funding (independently or jointly with other colleagues) for future research. This research should predominantly be interdisciplinary in nature, developing philosophical expertise and insights in order to tackle regulatory questions in the technology domain. Research will both be conceptual and fundamental, as well as applied in the form of studies commissioned by third parties (government, EU, and private parties). The applicant will actively share academic findings with society. The position will consist of 60-80% research and 20-40% teaching.

The successful candidate: 

  • Has a PhD degree in philosophy of technology. 
  • Is a specialist in the interdisciplinary domain of philosophy of technology and techno-regulation, preferably with a focus on privacy, trust, the end-user perspective, and data ethics. 
  • Has the skills to engage in empirically informed philosophy, e.g. through organizing focus groups, engaging in fieldwork, or conducting interviews.
  • Has a strong publication record commensurate with the stage at which the candidate finds her- or himself in her or his career. 
  • Is capable of gaining research funds. 
  • Has experience with working in an interdisciplinary environment (this should be evident from the candidates’ past performance in teaching, research or publications). 
  • Has a genuine interest in cooperating with legal scholars (a track record of such cooperation would be an asset).
  • Has several years of (inter)national experience. 
  • Has an UTQ-certificate / teaching skills. 
  • Demonstrates scientific integrity. 
  • Proficiency in English language and preferably also in Dutch, and/or committed/willing to learn Dutch at A1 level within 2 years. 
  • Plays a connecting role in the collaboration with other individuals and teams across Departments, driven by the value of multi-disciplinary research. 
  • Contributes to an open and diversified culture of excellence.

The starting gross salary varies between €5,190 and €6,317 per month (full time) based on scale 13 of the Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities. Tilburg University actively promotes equal and transparent salary between men and women by strictly applying predetermined parameters based on the candidate’s experience. Employees recruited from abroad may be eligible for the 30% tax facility - this means that 30% of your salary will be paid as a tax-free reimbursement.

Tilburg University offers you an employment agreement for a fixed period of 4 years and 1.0 fte (40 hours per week). 

You are entitled to a holiday allowance amounting to 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% of your gross yearly income. If you work 40 hours per week, you receive 41 days of paid recreational leave per year.

TILT is one of the leading research groups in Europe at the intersection of law, technology, and society. It is premised on the multidisciplinary study of socio-technical change, aiming at understanding the interaction of technology and social and normative practices, in order to clarify how regulatory challenges of socio-technical change can be addressed.
TILEC is an internationally renowned center of the Tilburg Law School and the Tilburg School of Economics and Management. It carries out interdisciplinary research on the governance of economic activity in the digital age.
