Job description

Do you want to contribute to exploring the role of animals in food systems that respect the planet, the animals and the people? Is quantitative modelling one of your areas of expertise? Do you want to strengthen the further development of the Animal Production Systems group, both in research and in teaching? We would like to get in contact with you.
The Animal Production Systems (APS) group is one of twelve chair groups within the Department of Animal Sciences at Wageningen University. Using concepts of systems analysis, we aim at providing integrated analysis of existing and innovative animal production systems to design a sustainable food future.
We acknowledge that the future role of animals in a sustainable food system is heavily debated. The animal sector contributes to food security and other ecosystem services, but has also a significant impact on the environment and is associated with concerns around, for example, human health (zoonoses; non-communicable diseases), animal welfare, labor conditions and farm profitability. We are aware that the transition towards a sustainable future implies making difficult decisions among conflicting goals (e.g. reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving biodiversity or improving animal welfare) that also emerge at various scales (farm, region, nation, chain). The degree to which we understand these integrated consequences of diverse animal futures is however still limited.
We are looking for a talented scientist who is eager to develop quantitative models that allow integrated analysis and design of alternative futures at local (farm) and regional level (including analysis of trade-offs and synergies and uncertainties). Someone who acquires, leads and implements innovative and creative (inter-)national research projects in our group; collaborates with colleagues and supervises PhD students, BSc and MSc theses and develops and teaches courses. In this way, you will contribute to the quantitative underpinning of the role of animals in food systems that respect the planet, the animals and the people.
