Job description

The Mathematical Institute at Utrecht University is offering a 4-year PhD position on the ERC project Chromatic homotopy theory of spaces under the supervision of Gijs Heuts. Your primary task will be to carry out research in the context of this project on the interplay of chromatic homotopy theory and unstable homotopy theory; the precise goals of the research project are flexible and will be adapted to the strengths and interests of the student. In addition, you are expected to carry out some work as a teaching assistant within the department.

Requirements

We expect you to have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, or to obtain such a degree before the starting date of the PhD project. Furthermore, we would like you to have a strong background in homotopy theory or related areas. A working proficiency in English will be necessary, as well as a collaborative and enterprising attitude towards research in mathematics.

Conditions of employment

Our Institute has a very active topology community including Lennart Meier, Ieke Moerdijk, and Gijs Heuts. You will have ample opportunity to participate in seminars and workshops here in Utrecht. Funding is available to support travel to conferences and workshops abroad.

We also offer:

  • a position for 4 years;
  • a full-time gross salary that starts at €2,395 and increases to €3,061 per month in the fourth year (scale P of the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (cao));
  • benefits including 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.
