The School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University offers a 4-year position for a PhD-candidate for students with a (Research) Master degree or equivalent, in the Department of Microeconomics and Public Economics. 

The Department is looking for PhD candidates in Economic Theory and Behavior (including Microeconomic Theory, Public Economics, Game Theory, Social Choice, Behavioral Economics, Experimental Economics and Neuroeconomics). In order to qualify, you must have successfully completed a Master’s degree (MSc or MPhil) in Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics, or a related area (preferably before July 2021, at the latest by September 2021) and have a good competence in written and spoken English. Graduation from a two-year Master’s programme (120 ECTS) and a quantitative background will be advantages.

Do you have a record of high academic achievement (e.g. good grades and/or involvement in other academic activities) and the skills required to become an excellent researcher in the field of your choice? If so, than a position as a PhD-candidate at SBE might be the challenge you are looking for.

  • Diplomas/degrees including a grade transcript of previous education at Master level
  • Two letters of reference (to be sent in by the referees)
  • TOEFL/IELTS/Cambridge Proficiency Exam
  • GMAT/GRE test score

In case one does not fulfil the starting requirement yet, sometimes a part-time pre-PhD position can be offered which allows time to catch up.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1,5+2,5.

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels for PhD students starting with a salary of €2.395.- with a yearly growth to €3.061.- gross per month (based on a full-time appointment). Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you might be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing. Other secondary conditions include a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.
