Job description

The chromosomes of bacteria and archaea are organized and compacted into a nucleoid. This is achieved by the action of nucleoid-associated proteins that fold the genome by bending, wrapping or bridging it. In our group we investigate, using a quantitative approach, the mechanisms employed by the various proteins that are involved in DNA organization and compaction both from a molecular and a cellular perspective (Peeters et al., Nature Rev Microbiol, 2015; van der Valk et al., eLife, 2017; Henneman et al., PLOS Gen, 2018; Qin et al., Nucl Acids Res, 2020; Henneman et al., Nucl Acids Res, 2020; Dame et al., Nature Rev Gen, 2020).

The proposed project is part of the multidisciplinary research programme “Resolving the fundamental building principles of the genome”. This programme brings together in a consortium the expertise and interests of four groups (Remus Dame, UL; Cees Dekker, TU Delft; Wouter de Laat, Hubrecht; Gijs Wuite, VUA). The overall aim is to establish a molecular understanding of the dynamic spatial organization of genomes and its interplay with transcription. To achieve this aim, the consortium partners intensively collaborate, exchanging expertise and people. The goal of this sub-project is to define by using biochemical and biophysical techniques, including live cell microscopy, the role of known and newly identified DNA binding proteins in bacterial and archaeal chromatin organization, and the mechanisms by which these proteins regulate genes.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Biochemistry, biophysics or equivalent;
  • Affinity with Quantitative approaches is required;
  • Experience with Live cell microscopy and Genetics is a plus;
  • Experience with Instrument building and Programming is a plus
  • Excellent proficiency in English;
  • Good technical experimental skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player in a multidisciplinary environment.

The position is available immediately.

Conditions of employment

We offer a position for initially one year. After a positive evaluation of the progress of the thesis, personal capabilities, and compatibility, the appointment will be extended by a further three years. Salary range from € 2,325 to € 2,972 gross per month (pay scale P in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
