Microorganisms continuously confront mankind with unprecedented challenges. Novel or altered microorganisms can cause epidemics or even pandemics, whereas exposure to antimicrobial drugs fuels the development of antimicrobial resistance among microorganisms.

Early detection of pathogens, their transmission dynamics and antimicrobial susceptibility as well as the importance of host-microbial interactions are key research themes. Driven by technical innovations and close interactions with clinical departments and the municipal health service, research within the Department of Microbiology spans the entire spectrum of fundamental to applied research. The research is divided in 4 themes that are embedded in the School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (NUTRIM) and the Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI).
