Job description

Erasmus University is stepping up its support on research data management as means to enable excellent research with impact and to practice open and responsible science compliant to external regulations. Therefore, an EUR Digital Competence Centre is currently being established combining a pool of faculty research data stewards and privacy officers as a front office  with a back-office of experts from, amongst others, the ERS, IT and the university library.

As strategic data steward you will act as a coordinator of the Research data stewardship pool and as manager for the front-office of the EUR Digital Competence Centre. The pool of data stewards consists of 5 recently started data stewards that are partly embedded in the faculties and partly at Erasmus Research Services.

Your work

  • You will develop and facilitate the team of EUR data stewards. This includes positioning the data stewards as the preferred first point of contact for researchers and as experts serving the researchers interests for the back-office support organisation.
  • You will coordinate the data stewardship activities transcending faculties in conjunction with the relevant stakeholders, contribute to knowledge exchange and assist the faculty data stewards when required.
  • You will be the liaison between the faculty research support teams, the data steward team, the chief privacy officer, ERS and other EUR DCC partners as well as other DCC’s outside the EUR.
  • As manager of the front-office of the EUR Digital Competence Center you will manage the EUR DCC portal and service desk to support all researchers in finding the right expertise quickly or setting up facilities by self-service. You will also manage the development of a knowledgebase to enable efficient and consistent answers to (frequently asked) questions and to create an EUR wide overview on RDM needs.
  • You will provide information, advice and support to managers and support staff at faculties or service units on (inter)national data stewardship developments. And coordinate RDM communication efforts.
  • You will contribute to the institutional development of research data management policies, workflows and best practices.

Requirements

  • An academic background (MSc/MA or PhD degree), preferably in social sciences, behavioural sciences or humanities.
  • Experience in coordinating and developing a team of professionals across department and institutional boundaries.
  • Experience with research methodologies and the way research data are managed in the field of the academic disciplines mentioned above, a broad understanding of how data and software underpin high-quality research.
  • Familiarity, affinity and empathy with ICT development and (academic) organisational and work processes.
  • Experience with policy work is a plus, especially with initiating, developing, implementing, and seeing to fruition guidelines and projects.
  • People manager with strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team,
  • Ability to work under time pressure, ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent spoken and written proficiency in the English language (C1/C2).

Participation in the EUR Data Steward training programme forms a prerequisite.

Conditions of employment

An internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with good working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The start date of this position is January 2021 and you will be based at Erasmus Research Services and one or two faculties in Rotterdam and possibly The Hague. The successful candidate will be offered a full-time, one year contract with Erasmus University Rotterdam. The contract can be extended in case of a positive assessment.

In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and is set at a maximum of CAO NU scale 11 with a minimum of  €3.746,- and a maximum of €5.127,- gross per month, on a fulltime basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits, like a very generous leave scheme. Furthermore, EUR is affiliated with ABP for the pension provision and we offer partially paid parental leave. Employees can also use EUR facilities, such as the Erasmus sports center and the University library.

EUR offers a Dual Career Programme (DCP) to assist the life partners of new academic staff (on pay-roll) in finding employment in The Netherlands. The programme is offered in close cooperation with nearby universities of Delft and Leiden.

Erasmus Research Services (ERS) has recently been established as a support organization for researchers in order to achieve the university’s ambitions on research and impact. ERS is there to help researchers during the preparation and execution of research projects. Therefore, a comprehensive set of services is currently being set up encompassing amongst others, grant support, business development & knowledge transfer, data management support, legal support, ethics, open science and responsible research intelligence. ERS works in close collaboration with research support staff at faculties and other EUR central services. We do so by setting up support communities under coordination of ERS.
