Are you inspired by developing signal processing and artificial intelligence for biomedical applications?

Job description

Perinatal, cardiovascular and sleep-related diseases are major health problems, and are on the rise. The MEDUSA program aims to make a major step in halting this rise and seeks to support the transition of care from the hospital to the home, through development and validation of technologies for prevention as well as therapy monitoring, in a value-based healthcare setting.

MEDUSA involves a close collaboration between engineering and clinical experts. In all projects within MEDUSA, technical PhD students are teamed up with clinical PhD students to jointly address a clear clinical innovation need.

This PhD project investigates out-of-hospital care for cardiovascular (especially heart failure) patients and for people at risk of becoming a heart failure patient. The focus is on risk profiling and forecasting disease progression through out-of-hospital monitoring, and on developing and validating value-based healthcare propositions related to these patients and monitoring approaches.

The project will leverage existing datasets that are collected in various trials under controlled (i.e. hospitalized) environments, as well as under free-living conditions. These datasets contain wrist-worn photoplethysmography (PPG) signals together with accelerometry and clinical markers. Concrete topics for you will be to study the PPG morphology in relation to cardiovascular disease and to study the coupling between PPG and accelerometry to investigate the response of heartrate and respiration rate to movement, which could be a valuable marker for cardiovascular state.

The project ambitions to develop a generic algorithmic toolset (library) that is applicable across various application domains. The targeted methodology will be to reveal connections between signals and physiology in such a way that features can be extracted from the signals and related to certain parts of underlying physiology. These physiological markers could then be employed in different combinations to study different disease mechanisms.

This project will be embedded within the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center (e/MTIC). This is a public-private partnership that aims to create a fast track to high-tech-health innovations in the perinatal, cardiovascular and sleep fields. It combines an academic partner (TU Eindhoven) with an industrial partner (Philips Research) and 3 semi-academic hospitals: Maxima Medical Center, Catharina Hospital, and Kempenhaeghe. On a project-specific basis e/MTIC also involves other parties that can help to reinforce these projects.

Besides research you will also contribute to education within the department. Apart from supervising BSc and MSc students in their research projects, other assistance in education, e.g. in bachelor courses, is usually limited to around 5-10% of your contract time.
