Neuropsychology concerns the relationship between brain and cognition, behavior and emotion, in both healthy individuals and patients with neurological disorders. Due to the aging population and improvements in care, there is a growing need for neuropsychological expertise which is being increasingly used in healthcare. This research area covers both applied and fundamental research. The applied research focuses mainly on diagnostics and treatment of neurological disorders. The fundamental side focuses on the theoretical foundations, which involves research into cognitive domains in healthy and sick individuals and the effectiveness of techniques that can be used for diagnosis and treatment. Technical resources such as online diagnostic tests and the use of virtual and augmented reality are currently improving in quality and availability. Neuropsychological research offers the ideal opportunity to develop, test and implement such resources for application in healthcare and society in a broad sense. In order to achieve this, a multidisciplinary approach involving healthcare and technical expertise is essential.

Neuropsychological expertise in specific (mainly fundamental) research areas is part of different units of the Psychology Institute of the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Science at Leiden University (see Embedding). However, there is not yet an integrated position that focuses on neuropsychology in health and disease for both fundamental and applied research in healthy subjects and patients. The owner of the chair  "Neuropsychology in health and disease" will focus on fundamental and applied neuropsychology in healthy individuals and in patients. The focus is on investigating neuropsychological mechanisms of relevant cognitive domains and developing diagnostic tools and interventions based on these mechanisms. The intended target group is adulthood (young to old) in which neuropsychological mechanisms are investigated in both healthy individuals and patients with neurological disorders. In the healthy population, such resources can target cognitive screening for neurological disorders such as dementia and stimulate cognitive ability in healthy elderly people. In neurological disorders this involves the development of cognitive screening tools, diagnostics and treatment for specific groups, such as patients with dementia. Fundamental research enables the development and testing of innovative diagnostic instruments, which can lead to important new insights and clinical materials. The social impact of findings is also taken into account, such as sharing findings with clinical professionals and the implementation of the developed materials, for example in collaboration with societal partners.

The chair position is part of the Health, Medical and Neuropsychology section and is embedded in the Self-regulation and Health research program of the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University. The position is in line with the research areas of the unit, with a focus on the fundamental and applied study of psychoneurobiological mechanisms and interventions to prevent and as a consequence of somatic disorders (a.o. Evers, Brosschot, Middelkoop, Gebhardt, van der Ham, van Middendorp, Veldhuijzen, De Gucht). The chair will also closely collaborate with chairs of other units in the Institute of Psychology, for example in the area of Cognitive Neuroscience of Decision making (S. Nieuwenhuis), Methods Cognitive Neuroimaging (S. Rombouts) or Neurocognitive Clinical Psychology (E. de Bruin). However, the position is clearly distinguished by its emphasis on neuropsychological mechanisms in both healthy individuals and patients, which underlies the development of applied insights and materials. The (nationally and internationally) unique and distinctive chair position will help to further develop research regarding neuropsychology in the field of health and disease to become a nationally and internationally leading and prominent scientific spearhead at Leiden University.

The position also ties in seamlessly with the stimulation areas of Leiden University, in particular the theme Population Health and the Social Resilience and Security program. Within the Population Health theme, neuropsychological expertise can be applied to the detection of risk factors and disease in the general population and appropriate care. In terms of social resilience and safety, the professorship can offer expertise on these themes in neurological disorders, such as dementia. The professorship is also closely linked to the Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition (LIBC) and will be given a relevant position in the existing intensive interdisciplinary collaboration between the Faculty of Social Sciences, the LUMC and the LIBC and the collaboration within Leiden, TU Delft and Erasmus (LDE) universities and Medical Delta. From an organizational point of view, the professor will fall under the Health, Medical and Neuropsychology unit of the Institute of Psychology, Faculty of Social and Behavioral Science at Leiden University.

With the use of this position in the field of “Neuropsychology in health and disease”, it is expected that the profiling of this theme will receive an important impulse for scientific research and education of the existing research areas of the Health, Medical and Neuropsychology section, the other units of the Institute of Psychology and the university-wide stimulation areas. The position also offers a unique opportunity to substantiate this theme in the field of research, education, management and societal involvement, in line with the existing professorships of the section: the (full-time) professorship of Health Psychology of the unit chair,  Andrea Evers, the (part-time) professorship of Clinical Neuropsychology (0.2fte) of Huub Middelkoop and the endowed professorship in Psychophysiological Determinants of Everyday Stress of Jos Brosschot.
