The Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA) engages in fundamental archaeological research in Northwest Europe, the Mediterranean and the Polar Regions. GIA stimulates and integrates fundamental research on past human societies and their environments, from Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers to complex urban societies. The Institute facilitates research and fieldwork through its laboratories, drawing facilities, documentation, GIS, and technical support (https://www.rug.nl/research/groningen-institute-of-archaeology/). Its Mediterranean Archaeology research group consists of six academic staff and about 18 active postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. The group has an international reputation in the areas of landscape archaeology and mortuary archaeology, with a geographical focus on Italy, Greece, and the Middle East. It teaches a general BA programme followed by a 1-year societal or a 2-year research MA programme.

We offer you a position which combines teaching and administration (ca. 40%) with research (ca. 60%).

What will you be working on?
You will be teaching and helping to develop general courses in Mediterranean Archaeology in the Archaeology and Classical Studies BA teaching programmes, which focus on Aegean prehistory, Italian pre- and protohistory, and the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods in the central and eastern Mediterranean. You will take part in the MA and Research Master Archaeology teaching programmes including supervision of theses and tutorials. You will also develop new courses in your specialist topic to strengthen the current departmental curriculum; this can be in either geoarchaeology and landscape archaeology, or osteoarchaeology and social archaeology.

You will help strengthen the research profile of the Groningen Institute of Archaeology by developing new research ideas, collaborations and approaches. You will be expected to acquire (independently or jointly) new funding for this, and will co-supervise PhD students when appropriate. You will be working with colleagues in the Departments of Classical Studies and Ancient History, as well as the interfaculty research institute CRASIS. If your specialisation is in osteoarchaeology, you can also work together with the Centre for Health and the Humanities and the Centre for Isotope Research CIO and will be developing further collaborations in the areas of mortuary archaeology and bioarchaeology. If your specialisation is in geoarchaeology, you can also work with colleagues in CIO and the Laboratory for Conservation and Material Studies LCM, and will be responsible for forming new collaborations in the area of soil science, geophysics, and geomorphological processes.

● you have a PhD in Archaeology, with a specialisation in either osteoarchaeology or geoarchaeology, and at least one year of experience as a postdoctoral researcher
● you have an excellent publication record for the stage of your career
● you have demonstrated the ability to acquire competitive funding and to manage research projects
● you are an internationally experienced researcher with an extensive academic network, who will take the initiative to strengthen GIA’s existing international research profile
● you bring a strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research and teaching duties, including in GIA field projects
● you bring enthusiasm for communicating academic research to non-academic audiences
● you have experience in teaching courses at university level
● you have relevant teaching qualifications (such as the Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO)/University Teaching Qualification (UTQ)), or are willing to acquire one
● you have a capacity and willingness to undertake organisational duties
● you have the ability to communicate and teach in English (CEFR C1 level for reading, listening, writing, speaking), and knowledge of Dutch or a commitment to learn it (CEFR B2 for reading and listening, and CEFR B1 for writing and speaking) within two years.

Fixed-term contract: 60 months.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

- a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience from a minimum of € 3,746 (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 5,826 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position
- 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants
- 232 holiday hours per calendar year for full-time employment and provide career services for partners of new faculty members moving to Groningen. The Faculty will consider only those applicants who are ready to move to Groningen and live in the near environment of Groningen within a period of two years
- an appointment on a temporary basis for 5 years.
