Leiden University College The Hague seeks to appoint an Educational Director

Job description

We are a close-knit international and interdisciplinary community of highly motivated staff and students at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, where English is the language of communication. The ED at LUC is a member of the College Board together with the Dean and the Operational Manager. The ED represents LUC inside and outside Leiden University in educational matters. The ED is responsible for the development and implementation of LUC's education strategy and policies, the staffing of the program, and quality assurance of the program Liberal Arts & Sciences: Global Challenges. The ED is the supervisor of a small team supporting the program (ca. 5fte): the Educational Coordinator, Course Administrator, Secretary to the Board of Examiners, Policy Officer education and Secretary to the Program Board, and Study Advisers. The ED is also the supervisor of lecturers with a short-term temporary contract.

Key responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the education strategy and policy of the College, specifically in the field of LAS education, students, and instructor development;
  • Responsible for quality assurance, evaluation and development of the program, including internal and external accreditation;
  • Coordinate and contribute to the development and innovation of the program together with LUC's staff;
  • Plan the staffing of the program, by allocating internal staff and arranging allocation of staff from other faculties and institutes at Leiden University. Roughly half of LUC's program is taught by affiliate staff based in other faculties;
  • Cooperate with the Operational Manager concerning the facilities and finances needed for the program;
  • Contribute to the educational policies and strategy of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs;
  • Work closely with the Program Board and the Board of Examiners;
  • Represent LUC in educational matters inside the university, among University Colleges in the Netherlands, and abroad;
  • Supervise the team of support staff concerned with course administration, program support, and study advice. Together with the team, ensure efficient and high-quality support of the program and students, supervise the optimization of working processes, and the development and further professionalization of the team and the individual team members;
  • Supervise lecturers on short-term temporary contracts.

Requirements

  • An academic degree (masters or PhD), preferably in a field relevant to education;
  • At least 5 years of experience as Educational Director or a closely comparable function in (preferably Dutch and/or Liberal Arts & Sciences) Higher Education;
  • A thorough knowledge of the law, regulations, and quality assurance processes in Dutch Higher Education;
  • Demonstrable experience and affinity with the educational concept of Liberal Arts & Sciences, with interdisciplinary, research-led teaching, and teaching innovation. Demonstrable affinity with a wide range of academic disciplines;
  • Knowledge of and experience with university policy cycles and decision-making processes, and with relevant developments in Higher Education in the Dutch and international context;
  • Excellent written and spoken command of the English and Dutch language (at least at C1 level). Candidates with insufficient command of Dutch or English will not be considered. Ability to write clear and convincing proposals and reports in either language;
  • Strong analytical, strategic, organizational, and networking skills, and a good feel for internal university relations;
  • Strong communication skills to foster cooperation and collaborations, inside and outside of LUC;
  • Excellent managerial qualities; able to lead, inspire, and motivate a team of professionals in educational support;
  • Knowledge of educational processes and able to support the professional and academic teams in the optimization of these processes;
  • Able to communicate clearly and convincingly about the practical and operational aspects of policy decisions, and able to move easily between the academic, strategic and operational aspects of the working field;
  • Demonstrable experience with an international and intercultural working context;
  • Committed to contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. The appointment (0.8 - 1.0 fte) is for one year with the possibility for a fixed appointment depending on performance and finances. The salary level ranges between € 5,190.- and € 6,317.- (scale 13 according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities), gross per month on the basis of a full-time appointment.
