The Institute of Political Science of Leiden University’s Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Developmental Politics

Job description

We are looking to hire an assistant professor in the area of developmental politics for a two-year temporary position. The appointment includes teaching introductory and advanced courses reflecting the candidate’s expertise, supervising MSc and BSc theses, conducting scholarly research, acquiring external research funding, and participating in the intellectual and administrative life of the Institute (i.e., department). 

The applicants must be qualified to research and teach in one or more of the following areas: the politics of global/international development; the political economy of development; the governance of development whether subnational or national, formal or informal, public or private, regional or global/transnational; state-building and developmental states. The ability to also teach general political science and methods courses is a plus.

The applicants should be well trained in one or more of the major sub-disciplines of political science (e.g., comparative politics, international relations, public policy or a cognate discipline) and in research methods appropriate to their field and interests; applicants trained in a cognate discipline must be able to demonstrate their familiarity with political science.

Selection criteria

  • Applicants must hold (or be near to completing) a PhD in Political Science or a cognate discipline;
  • Applicants must have a promising research agenda, some scholarly publications, teaching experience and good teaching evaluations;
  • Applicants must be able to teach in English; ability to teach in Dutch is a plus. Staff who do not speak Dutch upon appointment are required to progress steadily toward at least a B1 level (CEFR) through training financed by the institute.

The position starts as soon as possible, preferably by September 2021. We offer a full-time position for initially one year and upon satisfactory performance to be extended for one more year. Salary range from € 3,746.- to € 5,127.- gross per month, depending on experience (pay scale 11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences conducts high-quality research and offers a broad and disciplinary educational programme, focused on increasing our understanding of current developments in society. The faculty consists of five institutes: Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Cultural Anthropology and Developmental Sociology, Education and Child Studies, Political Science and Psychology. The Institute of Political Science has a strong research tradition in various areas of comparative, Dutch and international politics, as well as political theory. The Institute has around 80 academic staff, including many non-Dutch scholars, and houses a number of editorships of international refereed journals and book series. Members of the institute are also involved in a number of the university’s multi-disciplinary research centres, including Central and East European Studies, International Relations, Parties and Representation, and Political Philosophy. The Institute is based principally in Leiden but also has offices nearby in The Hague, where a large part of the teaching is done.

The Institute offers a range of taught programmes at the Bachelor and Master levels and also trains PhD students in political science. The BSc programmes include general Political Science (in Dutch & English, in Leiden), International Politics (in Dutch & English, in Leiden), and International Relations and Organisations (in English, in The Hague). The one-year MSc programme (taught mostly in English) includes five specialisations in Leiden and one in The Hague.
