Job description

The Department of Media and Culture Studies invites applications for a position in Musicology as Assistant Professor, starting August 15, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant is expected to complement the current teaching and research staff of Musicology. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the (historical) relationships between music and media, yet we also welcome other fields of expertise complementary to the research and teaching focus of our programmes.

Musicology at Utrecht University offers programmes at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral level. The Bachelor's programme in Musicology (taught in both Dutch and English) has frequently been rated best programme of its kind in the Netherlands and offers fundamental training in Musicology with a focus on Historical Musicology and Music and Media research. The 1-year Master's programme in Applied Musicology offers intensive training for a career as a decision maker in the music world. The 2-year Research Master in Musicology prepares students for a research-oriented or academic career in Music, including PhD studies. Both Master's programmes are conducted in English. Research in Musicology is incorporated into the organisational framework of the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON).

The successful candidate will carry out teaching and research in Musicology and contribute to the internal administration of the Department within a dynamic and challenging professional environment. Candidates are expected to have an excellent track record of teaching at preferably both the Bachelor's and Master's level, including thesis supervision, and must demonstrate willingness and ability to take on administrative tasks. Excellence in research must be evidenced by fulfilling several of the following criteria: completed PhD, internationally recognized publications, presentations at (inter)national conferences, the convening of scholarly meetings on a national or international level, and a track record of successful funding applications.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates with:
  • a track record in teaching at Bachelor's and Master's level;
  • significant research output, evidence of which includes a completed PhD and publications at an internationally recognized level;
  • experience with applications for internal and external research funding;
  • experience in university administration, in particular administering a teaching or research programme (desirable);
  • excellent communication skills and evidence of team spirit;
  • Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) according to Dutch university standards (or to be obtained within two years);
  • fluency in English at near-native or native-speaker level in oral and written communication;
  • fluency NT2 level in Dutch as a foreign language (for non-Dutch speakers: to be obtained within two years of appointment).  

Conditions of employment

This is a position of 1.0 FTE for the duration of two years with the intention of converting it into a permanent contract after a positive assessment. The minimum gross salary is €3,746 and the maximum gross salary is €5,826 (scale 11-12 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at a full-time employment.
Besides that, employees receive a holiday allowance of 8 % and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %.
