Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious PhD Candidate/Junior Lecturer in the field of Accounting. In this position you work on research (50%) and teaching (50%) for a 6-year period. Your research will have the form of a PhD project under the supervision of Prof. Dr Frank Hartmann. The PhD project focuses on the role of automation and technology in accounting and auditing. The project aims at studying topics such as the role of algorithms in managerial planning and control, the inclusion of sustainability in integrated performance management, the dynamics of traditional budgeting systems in the face of hyper-complexity, the integration of management control and risk management, the impact of automation on accountability, and the role of the accounting professional amidst these developments. Hence, you should have the knowledge/experience of new technologies as well as traditional accounting techniques and be interested in the organisational and behavioural implications of their usage. You will be expected to work on cutting-edge research publishable in highly ranked international academic journals. The research group and supervisors have published in top journals in accounting, management and related fields. 
Your teaching responsibilities include giving tutorials/lectures in the Bachelor's degree programmes offered by the Department of Economics and Business Economics, with a focus on Business Economics in general, and accounting in particular as well as supervising Bachelor's theses. Whilst holding this position, you will be given the opportunity to obtain your university teaching qualification.

Requirements

  • You hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field of economics, business administration, informatics, accounting, finance, psychology or equivalent by the time of employment.
  • You have good research skills evidenced by (very) good grades for research methods and statistics courses.
  • You have excellent writing skills, as evidenced by writing samples, such as your Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis or a (forthcoming or published) article or presented conference paper.
  • You are able to develop research ideas in the areas of accounting and accounting systems.
  • You are able to teach in English; Dutch teaching skills are an advantage.
  • You are enthusiastic and highly motivated.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

  • Employment:  1.0 FTE.
  • A maximum gross monthly salary of € 4,402 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 10).
  • The exact salary depends on the candidate's qualifications and amount of relevant professional experience.
  • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Duration of the contract: 6 years.
  • The intended start date is 15 August 2021.
  • Applicants from abroad moving to the Netherlands may qualify for a special tax relief, by which 30% of their salary is tax free.

Nijmegen School of Management

The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and higher education, focusing on institutional and managerial issues within complex organisations in both the public and private domains. There are seven disciplines within NSM: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics and Business Economics, Social and Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography, and Spatial Planning. NSM strives for a multidisciplinary approach where possible. Altogether, NSM employs 300 FTEs, 75% of whom are academics. 
Both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes are offered in the seven focus areas, which are organised in the NSM’s educational institute. The vacancy is within the Chair Group of Business Economics. The Department of Economics and Business Economics has three additional Chairs: Economic Theory and Policy, International Economics, and Financial Economics. The department is responsible for the development and quality of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Economics, as well as for the courses in Economics in the other educational programmes of the Nijmegen School of Management. What sets the Nijmegen curriculum in Economics apart is that it is characterised by a multidisciplinary approach whereby, in addition to the economics discipline, inspiration is sought from other areas. A related PhD position on technology and finance has been created in the finance group.
