Job description

The Security (SEC) cluster within the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands is hiring an Assistant Professor in the area of cybersecurity. We are seeking a high-potential candidate with experience in conducting teaching and research activities in the field of Data-driven Security. Candidates must hold a PhD in a related domain.

You will be expected to lead data-driven security research within SEC. Topics of research interest include one or more of: intrusion and anomaly detection, application of machine learning and AI to security, Internet security measurements, and cybercrime measurements and operations. You will carry out internationally-leading research and take an active role in providing high quality and innovative teaching in the broad area of cybersecurity.

SEC investigates the overall picture of the cybersecurity problem, tackling the engineering, deployment, management, and maintenance perspectives of systems and ICT infrastructures. Research in SEC spans three areas vital to the security of decentralized and embedded systems: security policy specification & enforcement, security of embedded systems and threat intelligence & defense. The cluster has strong ties with industrial partners and actively strives to apply its methods in industrial contexts.

SEC has a strong track record of publications in top conferences such as ACM CCS, IEEE S&P,  NDSS, RAID and Usenix Security, and journals such as Risk Analysis, IEEE TDSC, IEEE TIFS, ESEM, and others. SEC's publication record reflects the both foundational and operational take on cyber-security taken by the cluster. This is further integrated in the teaching and education curriculum offered at TU/e, with an entirely new Security Master designed around the cluster's diverse research.

At the center of the educational and research development is the development of the Eindhoven Security Hub SOC, a commercial Security Operation Center operating in the region and run within the department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Mixing security professionals with students and researchers, the ESH-SOC will provide a unique platform for research and testing with real-world impact, for example on machine learning/AI for security, threat detection, and threat measurement. Next to the ESH-SOC SEC is building a (Federated) IoT lab, in the context of the 8-yr, 32 partners IoT security project INTERSECT it leads, and a malware laboratory for threat analysis to further integrate research and bootstrap new collaborations.

In the context of this vacancy, you are expected to:
  • Have an outstanding research record in the area of cybersecurity.
  • Teach courses in the area of cybersecurity, as well as any other basic course in a Computer Science curriculum.
  • Acquire and coordinate research projects.
  • Actively strengthen the industrial and research collaborations of the group.
  • Contribute to the research and teaching vision of the group, the department and the University.
  • Professionally support the development of the SOC and labs managed by SEC.
