QuTech is a mission-driven research institute run jointly by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Job description

Your main task is to advise and assist researchers at QuTech with research data management and reproducible research practice.

You will:

  • Act as spokesperson for QuTech on data management and reproducible research, create awareness and explain to researchers the added value of good data management.
  • Lead the development and implementation of QuTech’s data management policy, with understanding of discipline-specific needs.
  • Assess and report to the management on the progress of QuTech’s research data management and advise on actions aiming to advance research data management practices.
  • Provide hands-on assistance of researchers in planning the collection, management and publication of research data.
  • Engage with researchers and engineers and help them adopt good data management practices, also with regards to documenting software code and hardware tools developed in QuTech.
  • Develop and run disciplinary training events tailored to researchers’ and engineers’ needs.
  • Engage with and support the Software Development Support Team to streamline quality standards on repositories and storage of software codes.
  • Liaise with the data steward coordinator and other data stewards to streamline data management related workflows within QuTech and TU Delft.
  • Help researchers work on disciplinary metadata standards to advance the “Interoperability” and “Reusability” aspects of FAIR data.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates experienced in research methodologies relevant to QuTech’s research.

Candidates:

  • Are interested in and an advocate for open science, FAIR data and reproducible research and engineering.
  • Have a PhD or equivalent research experience in a relevant subject area (desirable).
  • Understand how research operates and how well-managed data and software underpins reproducible research.
  • Have hands-on experience in managing and making research data and software reproducible.
  • Have experience in setting up appropriate tools for data management, e.g. storage, databases and pipelines, working with large data, data version control.
  • Have experience in (or willingness to learn) setting up appropriate tools for software development, e.g. code repositories, software version control, CI/CD pipelines, unit testing, code quality.
  • Are excellent communicators, able to speak not only with researchers, but also with other support staff and are sensitive to organisation-specific culture and practices.
  • Have a hands-on and can do mentality.
  • Have programming skills to support reproducible computational workflows.
  • Are fluent in English. Dutch is a plus.
  • Are in possession of an EU work permit.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: One year.

The Data Steward position is a 0.8 – 1.0 FTE role, with a minimum of 32 hours per week and a maximum of 38 hours per week. Appointment is for one year, with the option of extension. The UFO profile is that of Scientific Information Specialist 2, with a full-time salary based on VSNU-CAO Scale 10 (salary min 2,790 – max 4,402 gross per month on a fulltime basis). Actual salary will be based on your knowledge and relevant work-experience.
