Job description

We are looking for a colleague to take up a full-time temporary position of an Assistant Professor. You will be positioned at the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science of the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Utrecht University. The candidate is expected to be involved in teaching in Dutch and English, research and/or impact. Candidates with a particular interest in working with an interdisciplinary team of graduate students, faculty, and societal partners on projects aimed at understanding migration, cultural diversity and its impact on interethnic relations and immigrant integration, are encouraged to apply. You will be teaching in the Bachelor’s degree program in Interdisciplinary Social Science and our Research Master’s program Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism (MERM). Our teaching crosses disciplinary boundaries of fields such as sociology, psychology, and political science.

The department’s research activities are organized in three programs: ‘Migration, Cultural Diversity, and Ethnic Relations’, ‘Social Policy and Public Health’, and ‘Youth in Changing Cultural Contexts’. The position will be affiliated with the former program: Interdisciplinary Social Science: Migration, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Relations. Your research will be part of the European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations (ERCOMER, headed by Prof. Marcel Lubbers). We have a young, enthusiastic, interdisciplinary team. The group is internationally oriented and has long-standing collaborations with (inter)national research departments and societal partners. The research group participates actively in the national research school ICS as well as in the UU’s strategic theme Institutions for Open Societies and in the UU’s focus area Migration and Societal Change.

Research in the Migration, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Relations group has a stronghold in quantitative methods, but with room for qualitative approaches. Our research focuses on inclusion and exclusion of immigrants, both from the immigrant perspective as well as from the origin and destination country perspective. Research interests include a broad range of topics that fall under the umbrella of migration, diversity and interethnic relations, such as group identities, intergroup attitudes, nationalism and right-wing radicalism, discrimination, immigrants’ structural, social and political integration, dynamics in the first years after migration, religiosity and transnationalism. We examine these questions among the general population but also in specific settings, such as in schools, neighbourhoods and organizations.

Tasks

The position involves 60% teaching activities and 40% research time (preferably starting in November 2021). The core tasks will include:

  • contributing to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes within the curriculum of Interdisciplinary Social Science;
  • carrying out research within the scope of the research area of ‘Migration, Diversity and Ethnic Relations’;
  • translating and communicating scientific findings to different audiences, creating impact, also by ways of the group’s website maintenance;
  • contributing to the acquisition of external research funding.
