Job description

The Maastricht Science Programme is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated lecturer in Earth Science and Ecology. The successful candidate will teach courses in Earth science and ecosystem ecology and develop undergraduate student-centred research in fields such as invertebrate or vertebrate palaeontology, palaeoecology, palynology, stratigraphy or Earth systems science. The Maastricht region boasts a rich geological history and provides ample opportunity for developing field and laboratory-based courses and research.

We are looking for a lecturer with a PhD in Earth Science, Palaeontology, Ecology or a related discipline who is able to span deep time from the geological past to the present and the future. You should have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and undergraduate research-based learning. Interest in educational innovation or experience in an undergraduate College setting would be considered an asset.

You will be responsible for teaching and developing courses in Earth Science, Geology, and Palaeontology, and contributing to courses in Ecology and Evolutionary biology, and supervising student projects and bachelor thesis research. You will become an active part of our community, advising students, coordinating parts of our programme, organizing activities, building a scientific and educational network for our students to explore, and establishing contacts with other faculties within Maastricht, the Netherlands and across the world. You are stimulating and approachable for students and will readily interact with colleagues within Maastricht University and with other knowledge and business partners.

You will be joining a dynamic team of dedicated academics and administrative staff and a vibrant student community to contribute to our growing programme.

You have an excellent command of written and spoken English. Those with a multidisciplinary interest who are willing to cross boundaries between scientific disciplines, are especially encouraged to apply.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 2 years.

  • The salary will be set in salary scale 10 or 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (from € 2.790,- to € 5.127,- gross per month depending on experience and qualifications, based on a full-time appointment). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday allowance and a 8.3% year-end allowance;

  • We offer a 2 year full-time fixed-term employment contract as Lecturer Earth Science and Ecology.  Intended start date is as soon as possible. Depending on the development of the performance, an extension into a permanent employment contract is possible.

Maastricht Science Programme

The Maastricht Science Programme (MSP) is a highly selective bachelor’s degree programme in the natural sciences, situated in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. At MSP, we follow the tradition of the Liberal Arts and Sciences, with an emphasis on student-centred learning in a small-scale college community using problem-based learning principles. Our student-centred learning is characterized by the opportunity for students to build their own curriculum in the natural sciences, intensive staff-student interactions in small groups, community building, extracurricular activities and personal guidance. The programme is taught in English. The Maastricht Science Programme has experienced continuous growth since its start in 2011. Currently, more than 600 students from over 50 countries are enrolled in our programme. We are located on the Randwyck campus in Maastricht.
