The joint-bachelor program Mechanical Engineering in Amsterdam by the University of  Twente (UT) and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) has already run successfully for two years now. It provides an educational program in Engineering in the vicinity of Amsterdam. The bachelor is based on the Twente educational model in which (design-) projects form the programs backbone. Students work collaboratively on this project during a semester, and the other courses support the projects. During the project, the students have to cooperate with their peers to solve problems similar to professional engineers.

Job description

A position as junior lecturer gives you the opportunity to learn and co-create academic innovation and build a teaching portfolio relevant for future positions in higher education or for a position as a teaching professional in the industry. The junior lecturer position is focused on personal development as well as development as a teacher and academic professional. All junior lectures in the faculty are offered a training program, including a BKQ (Basic Teaching Qualification) trajectory. 
As a junior lecturer in mechanical engineering, you will be involved in teaching and co-designing different courses. Furthermore, you will support colleagues in other courses when needed. Aside from that, in the third year of the bachelor program, students will do a bachelor project at a company or research department. Part of this project is the course research skills which has to be (re)designed and executed for the UT-VU mechanical engineering program. This course will also be an important part of your position.

Requirements

  • You have obtained a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or (applied) Physics or you are a certified teacher of physics (certified first degree). Any other physics or engineering related degree can be discussed
  • You are interested in the Mechanical Engineering degree
  • You have excellent skills with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), you can work with LaTeX and Matlab (or comparable coding software) and you have experience with Solidworks (or comparable 3D sketching software)
  • You have strong organizational and collaboration skills (e.g. meetings, events, long-term projects, educational planning)
  • You have excellent social skills and an affinity with supervising students
  • You have strong communication skills in English (all educational activities are in English) 
  • You live in the Netherlands and can regularly attend the VU in Amsterdam for the above tasks that are part of your work

Your duties
  • You will take part in designing and providing lectures/tutorials of specific parts within content related courses. Examples of such courses are Thermodynamics and MODpro
  • You will take part in designing and teaching parts of courses (e.g., academic skills) to support other lecturers, like a course reader, give lectures, or coordinate parts of the course (e.g., continuous assessment)
  • Under supervision you will design, coordinate, and teach the course Modelling and Programming (part of Statics and Mechanics of Materials). In addition, you will contribute to the course Research Skills which is part of the bachelor project. This also involves network-related tasks to stay in contact with companies and research departments. In addition, you will support students in their bachelor projects
  • You will act as a tutor to provide students with content- and process-oriented support in different stages of the educational program

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 50 months.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization! On a full-time basis, the
remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €2,790 (scale 10) and a
maximum of €4,402 (scale 10), depending on your education and experience. The job
profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for 0.8 FTE. The
employment will be for 50 months, with 2 months probationary period.

About the division IH2LS
The division Innovations in Human Health & Life Sciences (iH2LS) is a young and
dynamic team of lecturers and researchers under prof. dr. Jacqueline
van Muijlwijk. She is involved in the teaching and development of educational
programs in the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition to teaching, she especially focuses on scientific research regarding the implementation and effect of i.a. active learning. You will perform your duties for the faculty within this group.
