Job description

The Department of History and Art History at the University of Utrecht invites applications for a temporary position for teaching the bachelor course "The Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East". "The Ottoman Empire" is a popular course that is part of the minor Middle Eastern Studies, aimed at students of the entire Faculty of Humanities. The course consists of one 2-hour lecture and two 2-hour seminars each week. This is an introductory course, to be taught in English, and we are looking for an all-round historian; expertise in the field of (early) modern Ottoman history is an advantage but not necessary (seminars and lectures have already been prepared).

Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • experience teaching undergraduate students;
  • a PhD in History, Turkology or a comparable field;
  • the ambition and ability to contribute fully to the academic life of the group and the department.

Candidates must fulfill the conditions set by the IND to work in the Netherlands

Conditions of employment

The initial appointment, as from 1 September 2021, will be on a temporary basis (0,47 FTE) for a period of 3,5 months (end date 15 November 2021). The appointment may be extended with a limited term teaching position for an introductory research course called Research Lab II from 1 February to April 15, 2022. Like The Ottoman Empire, this course will be taught in English.

The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €2,790 to €5,127 gross per month for a full-time position, consistent with the CAO (Collective Employment Agreement) scale 10-11 for Dutch Universities. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
