Job description

Are you a chemist and do you want to teach students the ‘tricks of the trade’ of synthetic chemistry? As a Supervisor, you ensure a safe and agreeable working environment in our education labs, give feedback to students and contribute to the development and improvement of experiments for the various lab courses.

We are looking for a chemist who enjoys transferring synthetic knowledge and skills to students. During the year, you will be the direct supervisor of groups of students at one of our teaching labs. You will ensure a safe and agreeable working environment for these students and teach them the 'tricks of the trade' of synthetic chemistry. You will also give positive feedback on the students' preparatory work, skills and reporting and grade them on these aspects. Lastly, you will contribute to the development, improvement and testing of synthetic experiments for various lab courses.

During periods in which no regular lab courses are taught (exam periods, student holidays) you will contribute to other departmental activities: routine maintenance of equipment, ordering equipment and chemicals, testing and improving experiments, and facilitating 'afternoon labs' for high-school students. You will be expected to be assertive and proactive in your approach to students and you should be able to combine clarity with a friendly and personal attitude.

Employer

The Faculty of Science undertakes scientific research and offers courses in the natural sciences. Education is organised in four education institutes. The Institute for Molecular Sciences is responsible for the study programmes in Chemistry, Molecular Life Sciences, and Science. Most of the courses are given in English. The Molecular Sciences teaching lab organisation is headed by the lab coordinator and organises and facilitates lab courses for students in the three study programmes mentioned above in close collaboration with staff from the research departments. In four lab courses, spread over three years, students learn to perform organic and organometallic syntheses. The level of complexity and difficulty of the experiments increases with each study year. We offer students thorough, complete and challenging training in synthetic chemistry and strongly value a personal approach.
