Job description

Erasmus School of Philosophy is seeking to appoint an assistant professor in philosophy, in the area of Social Philosophy. The main components of the job, apart from some administrative tasks (10%), will be teaching (50%) and research (40%). The teaching component will involve preparing and teaching courses in social philosophy at the undergraduate level as well as supervising students writing their theses. The research component will be in a domain of relevance to social philosophy, for instance philosophy of technology, critical theory, feminist philosophy or public philosophy.

Requirements

The candidate should have acquired a PhD in philosophy and should be interested in contributing to education, research and societal interaction in accordance with the profile and reputation of ESPhil, e.g. the development of a philosophical perspective on contemporary societal challenges. ESPhil has a strong record in combining academic excellence with societal relevance and the new colleague is expected to contribute to this. Notably, the candidate should contribute to the development of ESPhil themes (The Making of Modernity; Humans at the Edge; Philosophy and Economics; the Structure of Science and Reality). On the basis of a solid grounding in philosophy, the candidate is able to formulate (and support students to formulate) philosophical responses to societal challenges in terms of practical, normative and political thinking, building on perspectives such as philosophy of technology, critical theory, feminist philosophy or public philosophy. Moreover, the candidate should be interested in building bridges with other disciplines at EUR (notably within the social sciences and the humanities) and in the broader context for inter-university collaboration (ErasmusMC, TU Delft, Resilient Delta). The candidate is expected to contribute to (a) education (Bachelor programs and Master program Philosophy Now), to (b) research (via publications, supervision of PhD researchers, methodology development and acquisition of research grants both nationally and internationally), to (c) societal deliberation and public debate (public philosophy) and (d) to ESPhil as a vibrant intellectual community (via colloquia, meetings, etc.).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

An internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with good working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The selected candidate will be offered a contract at the level of Assistant Professor, starting as soon as possible, with the possibility of tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor after 6 years upon successful performance as judged according to specified tenure track conditions.

In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and is set at a maximum of CAO NU scale 11 with a minimum of € 3.746, - and a maximum of € 5.127,- gross per month, on a fulltime basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits, like a very generous leave scheme. Furthermore, EUR is affiliated with ABP for the pension provision, and we offer partially paid parental leave. Employees can also use EUR facilities, such as the Erasmus sports center and the University library.

 EUR offers a Dual Career Programme (DCP) to assist the life partners of new academic staff (on pay-roll) in finding employment in The Netherlands. The programme is offered in close cooperation with nearby universities of Delft and Leiden.

Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil) of Erasmus University Rotterdam is a leading research and teaching institution in the Netherlands. The faculty has a broad international orientation, with many international students and staff members and strong connections with universities abroad. Our research programs are internationally leading in our field. We offer two Master programs (the Master program Philosophy Now and the Research Master Philosophy and Economics) and two Bachelor programs (the BA Philosophy and the Philosophy of a Specific Discipline (second degree) program.
