Job description
The chair of Bioartificial Organs (BAO) in the department of Biomaterials Science and technology (BST) of the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW), has an opening for an outstanding PhD student in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering or related field.
Research description
In comparison to natural kidney, hemodialysis therapy removes only a fraction of uremic toxins and it is not continuous leading to significant negative impacts to the patients of End Stage Kidney Disease. More continuous therapy via portable / wearable artificial kidneys (PAK/WAK) could enhance patients' overall health, autonomy and mobility, allowing them to participate in social and economic life.
NODIAL, project aims to develop new dialyzers for PAK/WAK applied in the outside in filtration (OIF) mode. It will provide high toxin removal, achieve higher device durability and possibly lead to the need of lower systemic anticoagulation. The NODIAL-consortium includes the BAO, the company NovaFluX and the Radboud University Medical Center.
