Job description

Erasmus Magazine is looking for an up-and-coming journalist to fill the position of Junior Editor at Erasmus Magazine for a period of 1 year. This position is filled annually on a rotating basis. This job is a work experience position that includes coaching in the process of creating journalistic products, an opportunity for training in the field of journalistic professionalization and personal development. As Junior Editor you’ll work as part of the editorial team, write stories and look at your colleagues’ ideas and stories with a fresh perspective.

Your main responsibilities are:

-       Searching for and finding news at the university

-       Writing news articles and background stories

-       Attending meetings (such as the faculty council-meetings) as a reporter

-       Contributing to and working on more comprehensive investigatory stories

-       Publishing articles on the website and social media

-       Participating in the editorial team meeting

Requirements

-       You have completed university-level or university of applied sciences-level education, preferably with a specialisation in journalism

-       You have completed a journalism internship as part of your studies or you have at least 6 months of journalism experience as a member of an editorial team

-       You are inquisitive and persistent in asking the right questions to get the information you need

-       Your writing is incisive, critical, and creative

-       You have an excellent demonstrable grasp of Dutch and English (C2 level in one of the two languages, and a minimum C1 level knowledge in the other)

-       You are familiar with the possibilities and requirements of online journalism (candidates with  Wordpress experience have preference)

-       Knowledge and experience in creating videos is a major advantage

-       Candidates with an affinity for and knowledge of university life and journalism in a higher education setting will be given preference

Conditions of employment

Internationally-oriented and varied work within an enthusiastic team, with attractive fringe benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (cao-NU).

The employment contract is entered into for a period of one year. Remuneration is based on your specific knowledge and experience, and will be calculated on the basis of full-time salary ranging between € 2,656,- and € 3,548,- gross per month (scale 8). EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits and a very generous leave scheme. Furthermore, EUR is affiliated with ABP for the pension provision, and we offer partially paid parental leave. Employees can also use EUR facilities, such as the Erasmus Sports Center and the University Library.

Erasmus Magazine (EM)

Erasmus Magazine (EM) is Erasmus University Rotterdam’s independent journalistic platform. In the university community, EM is an incisive and critical source of breaking news and opinion.

EM is a bilingual online platform (NL-ENG) bringing readers background stories and news focused on Erasmus University’s students and staff. The editorial statute guarantees the independence of the editorial team in carrying out its duties.

EM’s editorial team is an independent department within the university’s General Management Directorate, positioned directly under the Executive Board in the organisation. Once this vacancy has been filled, the editorial team will consist of seven permanent members of staff, complemented by professional freelancers and student employees.
