Job description

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is recruiting a full professor to chair the Systems and Synthetic Biology (SSB) group. The mission of the SSB group is to contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying basic cellular processes, evolution and interactions among cells, organisms and their environment and to translate this knowledge into applications of biotechnological, medical and environmental interest. The approach is characterized by combining expertise on specific biological systems with extensive expertise in methods for data generation, integration and modelling. A key strength is the combination of fundamental computational expertise in systems biology with a laboratory that allows extending findings and testing hypothesis in a synthetic biology setting. The group further applies this approach to a broad range of systems through collaboration with experts. These systems encompass viruses, bacteria, fungus, microalgae, bacterial communities, host-microbe and host-microbiome interactions, and animals and humans.

The position of chair of the SSB group provides you the opportunity to further develop your own research line and your leadership profile. Together with other staff members, you are responsible for the academic and operational management of this chair group. You will define the research strategy, lead the team of scientists, lecturers and support staff, and further strengthen the national and international position of the group. You are also responsible for teaching and innovations in BSc, MSc and PhD courses, with the objective to contribute to the strong reputation and position of WUR in higher education.
The SSB group currently consists of 25 persons, including 4 tenured and scientific staff members, 2 lecturers, 1 technician, 15 PhD students and 2 post docs. More information about current research and teaching of the group can be found at Systems and Synthetic Biologyy and a description of the chair is available on request.
