Job description

A tenure-track position is available with the aim to bridge nano-electronics and optics by developing plasmonic-electronic devices that electrically excite and manipulate plasmons. These devices benefit from extreme field enhancements that can be used to solve important problems in various areas of research ranging from sensing, green chemistry, to non-linear optics.

THE CHALLENGE

In the group of Hybrid Materials for OptoElectronics (HMOE), we are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and independent Assistant Professor to develop a new line of research involving plasmonic-electronic devices where quantum effects dominate to explore new applications and solve scientific questions from a molecular design point of view. The research will be conducted in a highly interdisciplinary environment with world-class facilities and expertise in molecular materials, nano-electronics, and optics.

You will publish in international refereed journals, present at conferences, apply for external funding, and engage in international and interdisciplinary collaborations. You will teach courses and be involved in the supervision of students during their graduation projects.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in physics, physical chemistry, or related field, with a specialization in optics and good background in chemistry.
  • Minimum of 2-year post doc experience in a relevant area.
  • Demonstrated track-record of innovation in plasmonics, nano-electronics, and/or sensing with publications in the main specialist journals and conferences.
  • You are a self-motivating person who enjoys solving a challenging task in a team of like-minded people.
  • You are an independent thinker with excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • You are fluent in English and an excellent team player in an enthusiastic group of scientists and engineers working on a common theme.

Conditions of employment

You will be appointed fulltime for a maximum of 1,5 years. Near the end, you will be subject to a job performance evaluation. If the result is positive and the circumstances of the organization remain the same, the contract will be converted into a permanent contract. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO) and include:
  • A starting salary from € 3.807 (scale 11) to € 5.922 (scale 12) gross per month, based on relevant work experience.
  • A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
  • A minimum of 29 leave days in case of fulltime employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A fulltime employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis.

Department

The HMOE group is located in the Department of Molecules and Materials, Faculty of The Faculty of Science & Technology. The HMOE group develops and studies molecular-scale devices where charge transport and light-matter interactions go hand-in-hand and are important in areas of science ranging from biology, green energy and energy storage, catalysis, chemistry, physics, to nano-electronics and modern day data processing. We have developed plasmonic electronics transduces, molecular electronic plasmon sources, and multi-functional molecular switches, and we study in the detail the fundamental aspects.

The group contributes to MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, the largest research institute of the UT. The institute trains graduate students and PhD-students and conducts multidisciplinary research in the fields of photonics, nanotechnology, microsystems, materials science and microelectronics. We also make use of the Nanolab Twente, one of the best equipped academic clean room laboratories in Europe.
