Job description

The Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (NKI-AvL) is a leading Comprehensive Cancer Center with more than 100 years of history and employs high-performance multidisciplinary teams consisting of scientists, clinicians, laboratory specialists, bioinformaticians, software developers, security and privacy experts, data managers, and other staff.
In the next decade, NKI-AvL aims to leverage the value of Artificial Intelligence in Oncology (AI in Oncology) for its scientific research and healthcare activities. This covers applications in fundamental research, screening, diagnostics, treatment and quality of life. Increasing numbers of workers: students (PhDs, postdocs), scientific staff and treating physicians, conduct AI-related research and implement algorithmic diagnostic and clinical support. In addition to these developments, there is a growing focus on knowledge centralization and collaboration with external parties.

Your role 
You will be responsible for implementation and support of internal data, application and integration services. Your solutions contribute to our innovative, sustainable, secure and compliant AI-driven research and implementation projects. The team you will be part of excels in computational life sciences and works towards deployment and implementation of deep learning algorithms in routine pathological diagnostics. This is an extremely rich data space where large gains are to be made. Breast and Ovarian cancer, and specifically association to outcome and immunotherapy response, will be the areas of specific interest.
You will be working in a multidisciplinary environment within the research teams of Hugo Horlings (Pathologist at AVL and Clinical group leader ‘computational Pathology (www.cpath.nl) and Jonas Teuwen (Group leader AI for Oncology at NKI); and within the Core Facilities Molecular Pathology and Biobanking (CFMPB, led by Annegien Broeks),  and Research IT (https://www.nki.nl/research/facilities-platforms/) under the supervision of Jelle ten Hoeve.
The life cycle of data (and services) to be managed within the frameworks of the General Data Protection Regulation, the standard NEN 7510 (prescribing information security requirements for the Dutch healthcare sector), the Medical Device Regulation and the FAIR principles for improving the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse of digital assets. Requirements

We seek to recruit an ambitious candidate, holding a MSc or PhD degree, capable of independent thinking, with a strong commitment to translational cancer research and implementation in daily clinical practice. Candidates should hold a degree in computer science, bioinformatics or related discipline, and be proficient in programming languages (e.g. R, Python). We expect candidates to be highly self-motivated, creative, and a team player with strong communication skills. Full-stack development skills, core activities being back-end web stack and mobile stack, and administration skills for Linux and cloud-based systems is a requirement. For one of the two positions, experience with Agile/SCRUM, DevOps or MLOps (Kubernetes) is necessary.

It is a plus if you have:

  • Experience with clinical trials or translational research studies
  • Experience with digital (molecular) pathology systems, next generation sequencing and data models
  • Experience with information security and privacy aspects
  • Experience with the gaming industry
  • General knowledge of biology, anatomy, pathology and/or oncology 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year. There is the possibility for a temporary or permanent contract extension upon evaluation.

You will join a dynamic international research group. You will collaborate with scientists and clinicians with expertise in different disciplines. You will have the opportunity to follow high-quality courses offered by the NKI career development program. The gross salary per month will range from € 3.375,- to € 4.111,- according to the FWG-function group 55, and depends on previous experience. The terms of employment will be in accordance with the CAO Ziekenhuizen (Collective Labour Agreement for Hospitals). In addition, a fixed end-of-year benefit forms part of the secondary conditions. You will start with a contract for a period of 1 year. There is the possibility for a temporary or permanent contract extension upon evaluation. Amsterdam is a livable city with many cultural amenities. The institute is located within a 20-minute tram or bicycle ride from the center of Amsterdam and within 20-minutes from Schiphol airport by car, bus or bicycle.
