Job description

Utrecht University has opened a postdoctoral Researcher position in the field of Global Climate Governance. As our postdoctoral Researcher you will become part of the international team of the EU-funded ENGAGE Project, 'Feasibility of Climate Pathways'. ENGAGE is a consortium of international and multidisciplinary leading research groups, aiming to co-produce knowledge for designing cost-effective, technologically sound, socially and politically feasible pathways which can meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement. ENGAGE will also quantify avoided climate change impacts at regional and national level and identify concrete policy portfolios that maximize co-benefits and minimize trade-offs. Utrecht University shares responsibility for the governance dimensions of this challenging project, in particular with regard to the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the future pathways towards a sustainable future. You will be working closely with Prof. Frank Biermann at Utrecht University and Dr. Thomas Hickmann at Lund University.

Requirements

We expect successful candidates to bring a strong interest and broad expertise in the field of global climate governance, as evidenced by a doctoral dissertation and/or related postdoctoral experience in this field of study. There is no special disciplinary requirement. We are especially interested in a postdoctoral Researcher with a strong affinity to, and experience in, the theory of international relations and world politics. In addition, we expect you:
  • to have excellent communication skills;
  • to be a good team player;
  • and to have a strong affinity with working in an interdisciplinary and international research environment.

The working language is English. Teaching is not required in this position. However, if so desired, a limited involvement in the faculty’s teaching programmes is possible.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (0.8 FTE) for 14 months in an international working environment. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €2,836 and €4,474 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model). The postdoctoral Researcher will be affiliated with the Environmental Governance group, one of the four sections of the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development. The Environmental Governance group is a dynamic, ambitious and internationally leading team of over fifty Researchers with a focus on fundamental and policy-oriented research of governance processes, from local to global level.
