The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University invites applications for

University Lectureship in Global Political Economy (GPE) of China (1,00 FTE)

We are seeking applications from scholars of China with a PhD in global political economy, international relations, political science, sociology, development studies, or geography, with demonstrated teaching experience and research potential. We are particularly interested in applicants with a record of research on the political economy of mainland China's ties to various world regions and/or specific countries as well as China's role in various global institutions and industries.

The ideal candidate has experience in supervising BA and MA theses, an in-depth understanding of Contemporary China, and proficiency in the Chinese language.

We have identified supervision and teaching needs in political economy, politics, and international relations.

Key responsibilities

• Supervising theses in China Studies, (East) Asian Studies and International Relations/Global Political Economy.
• Teaching BA- and MA-level courses related to political economy, politics, or international relations with a focus on China/East Asia, in the BA China Studies and MA Asian studies (Leiden), BA International Studies (The Hague), and MA International Relations (Leiden).
• Developing a research trajectory, including the submission of competitive grant proposals.
• Contribution to the administrative work within the China Studies program and/or related programs in the Humanities.

Selection Criteria

• A doctorate in global political economy, international relations, political science, development studies, or geography with a focus on contemporary China.
• Experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate students, and supervising theses.
• Demonstrated excellence in research and publishing commensurate with the applicant’s career stage.
• High level of proficiency in English and Chinese.

Terms and conditions

We offer a fulltime, temporary position for 18 months, from 1 August 2022 to 31 January 2024. Upon good performance, the position will be converted into a permanent position. 
Salary range from €3807.- to €5211.- gross per month (pay scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). The lecturer may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until they fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to the number of years of relevant work experience.
