Radboud University is seeking a new professor in anthropology and development studies for its department of Anthropology and Development Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences. This chair will be one of two chairs in the department, next to a chair of cultural anthropology. In recent years, the department has developed an innovative research programme and a well-established educational curriculum, both focusing thematically on the interaction between diversity and inequality. Theoretically, research within the department is open to various perspectives in order to contribute productively to the analysis of challenging societal questions.
The increasing diversity of many societies has become a key contemporary concern as it is often associated with declining social cohesion. At the same time, debates about diversity are inherently linked to widespread concerns with rising inequality. The principal question the department’s research programme addresses is, therefore, how diversity and inequality are shaped in various contexts, how diversity and inequality affect social interaction and how they possibly reinforce each other. These questions inspire both research and teaching on a variety of subjects, ranging from issues of belonging, diversity and poverty, to shifting relations between the state and citizens, and, last but not least, a concern with human-nature relations in view of a number of interlocking crises, such as climate change and the increasing scarcity of natural resources. Research within the department is conducted both in the Global North and the Global South, mostly from an interdisciplinary perspective.
You will bear responsibility for the future development of the research programme and the education curriculum in consultation and cooperation with staff and students in the department. You will be engaged in three core areas: education, research and management & academic leadership.
As a professor, you will deliver high quality, innovative and impactful teaching in both Bachelor's and Master's phases to students of the programme in Anthropology and Development Studies and, moreover, to the Research Master's programme in the Social and Cultural Sciences. You will be involved in the education curriculum at both course and programme level, as well as in the preparation of evaluation reports for external reviews and accreditation procedures. You will also promote further internationalization of all degree programmes. Finally, you will make your expertise available to the Advanced Master's programme in International Development (AMID).
You will conduct high quality research, with impact, and will supervise research conducted by PhD students and staff members. In addition, you will contribute to the further strengthening and expansion of the research programme of the department, which has recently been evaluated and assessed as 'very good'. You will also play an active role in, and contribute to the interdisciplinary research programme of the Radboud Social Cultural Research institute (RSCR), in which the disciplines of sociology, gender and diversity studies, and anthropology and development studies cooperate. In this capacity, you will actively seek to build bridges between different disciplines in the social sciences by developing joint research and PhD projects within the faculty and beyond. Responsibilities also include attracting research projects based on external funding. In this context, you are expected to collaborate with other local, national and international partners.
You will take a fair share in management and leadership within the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies, the Radboud Social Cultural Research institute, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Radboud University. Through your behaviour you will promote an attractive, productive, inclusive and safe work environment and stimulate talent development and team spirit.
Fixed-term contract: It concerns a permanent employment.
