Do you enjoy Algebraic Geometry, Number theory, Representation theory and would like to learn about the Galois representations, Shimura varieties and the Langlands program? Then the job of PhD student at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is perfect for you as a highly versatile professional.

As a PhD-student you will conduct research on a problem related to Arno Kret’s VIDI project ‘Shimura varieties and the Langlands conjecture'.

What do we require of you?

A passion for pure mathematics and a strong desire to write a PhD thesis.

We require:

  • a Master in pure mathematics providing a strong background in number theory, algebraic geometry and/or representation theory;
  • fluency in English, both written and spoken.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months.

Our offer

You will part of our lively local research group and a very active national community.

We initially offer an employment contract for 18 months, fulltime (38 hours per week). If you prove to be a good match for the job, then an extension of 30 months (2.5 years) may be given.

The salary range is between €2,434 to €3,111 euro gross per month, on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable. The preferred starting date is 1 September 2022.

The Algebraic Geometry group at the Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) consists of Arno Kret, Diletta Martinelli, Mingmin Shen, Lenny Taelman, and their PhD students and postdocs. We run research seminars and study groups, and together with mathematicians of nearby universities we organise many national activities including national courses, the Intercity Seminars and the Belgian-Dutch Algebraic Geometry days.

We also have a lot of interaction with the local research groups in Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics.
