Job description

The department of philosophy has a vacancy for an assistant professor (tenure track) in philosophy of neuroscience.

Area of specialisation: philosophy of neuroscience.
Area(s) of competence: at least philosophy of mind and philosophical psychology, optional: philosophy of psychiatry.

Your duties
  • teaching courses to MA students in the mastertrack Philosophy of Neuroscience, BA students in Philosophy, and introductory courses in philosophy to BA students of other programmes
  • supervising theses in BA and MA programmes, in particular in the mastertrack Philosophy of Neuroscience
  • conducting research in the philosophy of neuroscience
  • applying for external research funding
  • contributing to outreach, as part of research and/or teaching
  • performing administrative tasks (in particular assisting in the coordination of the mastertrack Philosophy of Neuroscience)
Your teaching will cover topics in the philosophy of neuroscience and philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychiatry and introductory philosophy courses in other faculties. The mastertrack Philosophy of Neuroscience (https://vu.nl/en/education/master/philosophy-of-neuroscience) is a collaboration between the Department of Philosophy at the VU and the Department of Anatomy and Neurosciences at Amsterdam UMC (location VUmc).

Your research should be related to the philosophy of neuroscience, either from a philosophy of science, metaphysical, clinical or ethical perspective. Your research will be embedded in the theoretical philosophy group of the department, and in the interdisciplinary research institute CLUE+.

Administrative tasks may be at Department or Faculty level.

Requirements

Candidates have:
  • a PhD in philosophy and a strong research profile in the relevant field
  • strong teaching skills
  • a strong and relevant international network
  • a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO or equivalent) or are willing to acquire it in the first two years of appointment as part of the tenure track
  • mastery of English at CEFR C1/C2 level
  • mastery of Dutch or willingness to learn Dutch as part of the tenure track
  • a degree and experimental or clinical training in the neurosciences or other relevant disciplines (e.g., psychology, psychiatry) will be relevant in the selection procedure

Conditions of employment

We offer a tenure track position at the level of assistant professor, initially for five years. The standard division of labour at our Faculty is 60% of teaching, 30% of research, and 10% of administration and management. During the tenure track, performance will be evaluated in all three domains. After a positive evaluation, a permanent position will be granted.

On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of € 3.821 (scale 11) and a maximum € 5,230 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for 1 FTE.
