Job description

The Department of Communication and Cognition in the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences is looking for an enthusiastic new colleague in Cognition and Communication. This position is especially for academics who have just obtained their PhD and want to continue their academic career. 
 
The successful candidate will contribute to one of the leading programs in the Netherlands in Communication and Information Sciences (CIS, bachelor and master), consisting of three tracks: Business Communication and Digital Media (BDM), Communication and Cognition (CC), and New Media Design (NMD). Annually, the CIS program attracts approximately 125 new bachelor students, 350 new premaster students, and 300 new master students. The candidate may contribute to all of the tracks in CIS, and will also supervise bachelor and master theses. 

The successful candidate is also expected to conduct research in the Tilburg Center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC). Researchers in TiCC explore cognitive and social aspects of human communication through a multidisciplinary approach, combining careful experimentation with survey methods, interviews, corpus analyses and computational modelling. Core research domains include (in alphabetical order) communication and technology, cross-cultural communication, information visualization, interpersonal and group communication, language production, new media design, persuasive communication, social media research, strategic communication, and non-verbal communication.

Requirements

As a successful candidate, you have:

  • obtained a PhD in a relevant discipline;
  • published in international journals or proceedings;
  • excellent methodological skills;
  • a professional attitude with a strong commitment to integrity and (research) ethics;
  • a willingness to acquire the basic qualification at Dutch universities in higher education (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs; BKO) certificate or attend a didactic course for lecturers;
  • a capacity to teach in English and Dutch (or the willingness to learn Dutch).

Conditions of employment

We offer a full-time lecturer position. In principle, the successful candidate receives a contract for 12 months. After this period, an extension of the contract with 1 or 2 years is possible following a positive performance review. The salary amounts to a minimum of € 3282,- and a maximum of € 4490,- gross per month for full-time employment, based on UFO-profile of teacher 4 or 3 and salary scale 10 or 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities

Tilburg University offers excellent employment conditions with attention to flexibility and (personal) development and attractive fringe benefits. You are entitled to a vacation allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% of your gross annual income. If you work 40 hours per week, you will receive 41 paid days of leave per year. 

All employees of the university are covered by the so-called General Pension Fund for Public Employers (Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP). Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance of 30% of their taxable salary if they meet the relevant conditions. The university applies for this allowance on their behalf. The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation. The collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities applies.

Research and education at the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) has a unique focus on humans in the context of the globalizing digital society, on the development of artificial intelligence and interactive technologies, on their impact on communication, culture and society, and on moral and existential challenges that arise. The School of Humanities and Digital Sciences consists of four departments: Communication and Cognition, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Culture Studies and Philosophy; several research institutes and a faculty office. Also the University College Tilburg is part of the School. Each year around 275 students commence a Bachelor or (Pre) Master Program. The School has approximately 2000 students and 250 employees.
