Tilburg School of Catholic Theology (The Netherlands) of Tilburg University, wants to engage an enthusiastic and competent PhD-researcher with a research project that matches one of our research programs (“Teaching and Tradition” and “An Altar for an Unknown God”). Specialists from several theological disciplines as Biblical Studies, Church History, Systematic Theology and Practical Theology conduct research within these programs. For these positions we seek a candidate with a (research) master's degree in Theology or a related field, a strong research profile, and excellent academic qualifications and writing skills. Developing and defending a research proposal will be part of the procedure.

Requirements

The selected candidates are expected to have completed a PhD thesis (which may be based on articles) by the end of the contract. Selected candidates are also expected to follow a postgraduate program and to attend the meetings of both the research program and the Graduate School. The trajectory leads to obtaining the degree of PhD. It is also a possibility to obtain the canonical degrees STL and STD.

Conditions of employment

Selected candidates will start with a contract for one year, concluded by an assessment. Upon positive outcome of the assessment after the first year, the candidate will be offered a contract for the remaining years (2 or 3 years, depending on the previous degrees of the candidate). Concretely, candidates with a Research Master (MPhil) will be offered an additional 2 year-contract. Candidates with a Professional Master's degree will be offered an additional 3 year-contract. 

The salary amounts to a minimum € 2443,- gross per month for full-time employment, based on UFO-profile of PhD of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. (or € 2846,- for a Research-Master student). Tilburg University offers excellent employment conditions with attention to flexibility and (personal) development and attractive fringe benefits. You are entitled to a vacation allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% of your gross annual income. If you work 40 hours per week, you will receive 41 paid days of leave per year. 

Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance of 30% of their taxable salary if they meet the relevant conditions. The university applies for this allowance on their behalf. The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation. The collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities applies.

Tilburg School of Catholic Theology (TST) focuses on scholarly training and research in Catholic theology for the benefit of all those interested and in particular for those preparing for an office or position requiring a canonical mission. TST is the only school of Catholic theology in the Netherlands that is recognized by the Church. Besides offering scholarly education, preparing students for ecclesiastical office, the school also offers a research-masters programme in theology and a master programme Christianity and Society. The faculty’s main offices are located in Utrecht, but a full programme of studies is also taught in Tilburg.
