Job description

The section Economics of Technology and Innovation ETI in the department of Values Technology and Innovation VTI is looking for an ambitious economist who would like to develop or continue an academic career path on climate economics and finance at the vibrant and very international academic community at TU Delft, a world leading engineering university. This position is part of the Climate Action Programme CAP of TU Delft. In April 2021, TU Delft launched the extensive CAP to advance its capacity in research and education and to  improve the sustainability of the university campus. For the next ten years TU Delft will allocate 22 million euro to set up and shape this extensive programme. The TU Delft vision on Climate Action is deeply founded in preceding decades of university wide climate action research. The CAP goal is to build on current strengths and identify the areas where there is a need to strengthen our capacities to keep up our (inter)national reputation as climate action university. Climate finance is at the heart of many climate change policy proposals such as the Glasgow Climate Pact, Paris agreement, European Green Deal, the obligatory disclosure of climate risks for governments and companies. It is about mobilizing financial resources aimed at stimulating adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. Climate change and finance impact all infrastructure decisions, including clean energy investments, phasing out fossil fuel systems, climate-resilience of existing and new urban development, and climate-proofing infrastructure investments in general. Yet, little is known about how finance shapes the evolution of infrastructures and resilient systems. We welcome an Assistant Professor who will use quantitative (data-driven or/and model-based) approaches to understand how climate finance shapes the evolution of infrastructure and networks, their resilience and exposure to climate risks. Climate-sensitive investments could either strengthen or undermine the economy, potentially triggering cascading economic effects leading to systemic risks. Hence, climate finance instruments should be designed to efficiently and effectively achieve resilience to climate change across different countries, regions and infrastructure systems. By blending climate finance data with data on infrastructure evolution, new data driven methods or models will be developed to determine how climate finance shapes the development and resilience of infrastructure networks, cities ,and regions. Based on this analysis, the trade-offs faced by climate finance will be revealed. This will ensure that the tremendous investments in climate adaptation and mitigation are used in a fair, efficient and effective way. As a TT you will inspire colleagues and students through research and education, the latter by courses (existing and to be developed) and project-oriented education. To create lasting impact of this CAP, we especially envision a cross-faculty minor along with outreach and training activities for practice. To realise the ambitious research and impact agenda of the CAP, you are expected to acquire funding for new research projects from different national and international funding schemes and contribute to organizational tasks and impact of your work. Within the postion you will receive a start-up package in the form of a funded PhD position to support your development as well as the research line. Both the assistant/associate professor and the PhD position will be based in the ETI section.
